Fave places near Fenway?
DH and i are heading up to Boston for two back to back Red Sox games in May (Red Sox Cubs series)
we have never been to Fenway and are crazy excited about it. so looking for best places to grab a beer and some food before hand (these are night games so are plan is to head to the general area a few hours before the games to eat/drink/hang out).
of course google and trip advistor are great sources but looking for local faves!

Petit Robert is amazing. The giant profiterole is TDF! Just around the corner from Fenway, Petit Robert is a nice French Bistro.
The Citizen Public House is supposed to be very good. I live directly across the street from one of their sister restaurants in the South End and SO and I go there way to often!
If you're looking for basic sports bar food/ atmosphere I've heard good things about Game On. It's right next door to Fenway. Its really popular but if you're going early you should be ok.
If you're looking for good beers too try Boston Beer Works - Fenway. It's a microbrewery with 4 or 5 locations. One is right by Fenway. The beers are good and the food is always good too.

A cool place for a beer is http://bleacherbarboston.com/flash/ its like in the stadium but you access from outside, its beneath the bleachers apparently in an old storage closet... it is great just for a drink and to see the stadium from that view.
I went to the Baseball Tavern once, and I thought it was kind of grimy. But I didn't make it to the roof deck, and it's pretty much what you'd expect of a dive sports bar.
For a "nicer" meal over there, we like Burtons. But as PP said, if you want to go somewhere like Boston Beerworks or Game On, then you need to get there really early, and expect a crowd. We usually head to somewhere on Boylston Street (usually Lir, but there's also Solas, Bukowskis, or the Pour House) and then walk over to Fenway, because it's a little less crazy. But if you're only here for a game or 2, then you definitely want to take part of the Yawkey/ Landsdowne madness.
Beerworks is always great, try the blueberry beer!
Baseball Tavern is good if the weather is nice, and you can go on the roof deck, otherwise, it's dark and crowded inside.
Lanesdown Bar has surprisingly good food, and might be a little less crowded before a game as its not a sports bar.
If you get there early enough, Bleacher Bar is fun to check out, it's under the green monster... very cool. Never tried the food though.
