Yesterday I went out for a 4 mile run with my dog. As we are crossing the Stone Arch Bridge, an owner with a dog on a retractable leash lets her dog run directly across the bridge to get to my dog. The retractable leash was so long that it allowed the dog to go the width of the bridge...just as a biker was coming up. The biker had to slam on its breaks so as to not run into the leash which was stretched across the entire bridge! He starts yelling at the owner to be careful and they are laughing!
Then...on my way back across the bridge, another dog owner has her dog on a retractable leash. She allows the dog to run across the width of the bridge to JUMP on my dog's head. We were both completely startled. I yelled at her to control her dog and she started laughing.
Seriously, what the hell is wrong with people?

I hate them with a passion.
I should add so I'm not a hypocrite... we DO own one....but it is ONLY used to go out to potty in the backyard and never on walks!!!
So...I amend my statement to say, "Retractable leashes should be against the law in public." :-)
We're like you, Kiz - we own two - but we only use them for potty breaks in the yard when we didn't have a fence. Or for the fence jumper foster dogs in the backyard.
I know! We have one and used to use it when we first adopted Hurley (we didn't know any better). As soon as we started obedience classes they told us how terrible they are and we immediately stopped using it.
That's why we have one. So Puckett can get more than 6 feet away from me when he poops. ha
Can I counter this with a stupid neighbor story? There's a family in the apartment complex behind ours that always lets their little (5 and 2 years maybe?) kids run all over the yards, across the street, etc. I took Puck out to go to the bathroom yesterday, not knowing there were kids outside. The little 2 year old screams "PUPPY!" and runs across the street at him from behind, while he's peeing. Obviously Puck was startled, but didn't growl or anything. He just ran back over closer to me. When the mom came over, I just told her to be careful, because it's not safe for kids to run up at dogs unexpectedly. The mom then has the nerve to yell at me. "You need to CONTROL your DOG. What if he had BITTEN my KID." I just looked at her and said "I know my dog is not completely trained yet, that's why he's on a leash. Maybe you should do the same to your kids if you can't control them."
I was LIVID. I called the apartment today to let them know what happened, just in case she tries to say Puck ran at the kids or anything... which he didn't. at all.
