Best latin-american or caribbean grocers in area?

Hi All,

DH and I are celebrating our 4th anniversary soon and the traditional gift is fruit and flowers.  I'd like to get him a fruit he remembers having in Trinidad.  It goes by many different names (chenette, mamoncello, mamom, spanish lime) and I thought some latin-american or caribbean grocers might carry it.   I will do a google search of grocers but was wondering if anyone here had specifc recs.

Thanks a lot.

Rachael

  • There is a very large international grocery market off of Little River Turnpike and 395in Alexandria. They might have what you are looking for.

  • I'm not sure where you are located, but there is a pretty big and always bustling Latin grocery in Rockville - Mega Supermarket.
  • In what area (state) are you looking?  This is our go-to for all sorts of international stuff - it's in Springfield, VA:

  • Thanks everyone! We're in Rockville-I will definitely give all of these a call.

  • My husband goes crazy for these, too... but, he calls them kaynep or gaynep (or something like that...)

They're seasonal - so, you may not find them in the store right now.  I can't recall when I've actually bought them.

We've bought them a few different places - HMart, Lotte Plaza, and GrandMart.

He says they're not *exactly* the ones he used to have growing up in the Caribbean... but, they're close enough!

    Good luck!  :)

THANK YOU!!!!!  None of the other stores in this post carry them but I know they might not also be quite in season yet.  I will call around!

No prob!  I'll keep my eye out for them if I go shopping this week, too.

You might want to add "quenepa" to your list of stuff you ask for when you call the stores... I think that's what they were labeled as at HMart...  (although, I can't remember exactly....)

  • not sure how it's spelled but its pronouced G(like in girl) "gin-nup". You can probably get them at any hispanic grocer to if you can't find carribbean grocer...
