BR Question...might be dumb
Is there a reason that most people don't use their crib right away for a newborn? Besides the luxury of having fast and easy access to your baby at night?

I was kind of wondering the same thing.
Like you, I was thinking the fast and easy access thing.
Because some babies don't want to be in the crib from day one. Can you imagine being in a nice, warm womb for 9 months and then suddenly you're outside of it, in a new place, and your mommy leaves you in a cold bed? That's unsettling for a newborn.
Ellie would not sleep for the first 2 weeks without someone holding her. We swaddled, we patted, we tried to soothe her into sleeping in the crib, the pack & play, the swing, the bouncy. She would not have it. And when you're an exhausted new parent, you will do anything to make your newborn happy.

Yep, it really does just depend on your baby. Ellie tends to feel safer if someone is in the room with her. She really hates it if she wakes up and she's alone. But, your baby could be totally independent and be just fine with sleeping in his own room. It's all about figuring out what works for you.

I had a friend whos little one didnt sleep in a bassinet more than 5 days while others still sleep in one for months. Its really up to the baby. I am hoping ours only uses it a few weeks then transitions to the crib.
Every baby is different.
Our plan as of now is to use the crib at night and things like the rock n play during the day for naps. It really doesn't phase us to use the crib at night since Evie's crib is in our bedroom anyway. If we had a nursery for her, I'd probably use a bassinet just for convenience.

H and I also wanted to put baby in the crib from Day 1. I have a few friends and coworkers who did it successfully, and Tonia's obviously doing well with it too.
However, even though our nursery is about 12 feet away from our bedroom, we'll probably have the baby in a PNP next to our bed for the first 3 weeks or so until I establish a feeding routine. Because I'm the sleepiest person ever and don't want to have to get out of bed to nurse, I'd rather grab the baby from next to our bed, nurse it and then put it back in the PNP. We thought about getting the "Co Sleeper" but the cats could easily jump in there since it's at the same height as the bed, and I don't want the cats snuggling with the baby since they sleep with us.. I already have no idea how we'll keep them out of the crib.
We do hope to have the baby in the crib after the first month though.
Do you have the crib/pnp etc set up yet? If so, put aluminum foil on it. They won't like the sound and will associate them together after. We did this on the changing pad and the crib and I put a little baby powder on it so I could see if they jumped on it. It worked for them. We do however shut his door at night.

We had Teaghan in the room with us up until this past weekend. I would put her in her crib to nap but starting this week we are doing nights also.
We were going to do straight to crib for the same reasons as you, H works and I do the night time feedings. I however wanted her near me for a few weeks once we got home, now that its been almost a month I am comfortable putting her in her crib.
Do you just spread and fold the foil all around the top of the crib? I'm thinking I'd have to spread the foil all around the actual mattress too, since I'm not sure if they always jump onto the crib rails and then onto the mattress, or if they just take one flying leap right into the crib. (Unfortunately, our glider has to be right next to the crib since it's the only place it'll fit, so the cats can jump from the glider to the crib.) I will try this tonight -- it's going to take a ton of foil! The cats don't really go into the nursery often since they prefer to hang out with and sleep with us, but they were super curious when we first set up the furniture, and I know they'll be WAY more curious once a baby's in there and H and I are going in and out of the room all the time. We'll probably have to shut the door at night too.

3 words: FP RnP Sleeper.
There's a reason this is such a wonderful item - it's portable, it's convenient, and it's much cosier for a newborn than a wide-open crib. Of course there's no reason why a newborn can't go right into a crib, but not all babies go for it. Sami didn't go into her crib until she was 3-months old.

I did it for my own piece of mind and sanity. Weston was on an apnea monitor whil sleeping until he was a month and an half. I just felt better with him right next to me a) so can easily check on him b) if an alarm would go off, I could easily just look up and see what one it was/if it was a false alarm c) with him being connected to wires, I just felt safer with him in the small bassinet right by me.
Once we got the results of the monitor recordings, and that it was clear of any incidents, we transitioned him to the crib right away with no problems.
