Poll: have you ever been to the Marathon?

In honor of Marathon Monday:

Re: Poll: have you ever been to the Marathon?

  • In all the years I've lived in Boston I've never had Patriot's Day off so I've never attended the race.  DH was unemployed last year so he went out to catch one of our friends along the route and jogged a couple of blocks with him.  That's about as much running as either of us do, haha!

  • I live one block away from Beacon St and I've actually never gone to "watch it." I'm either at work or running errands, so I may walk by it, but thats it. In college I would drink all day in honor of the marathon though.

  • I did some work for the company John Hancock hires to take care of the elite athletes so I actually got to be really involved with the marathon for one year.  It was a super cool experience.
  • yep, when we first moved here when I was in middle school (since we had April vacation this week), we used to go to Speen Street in Natick and watch

That must have been so awesome!

  • Watching and running are two totally different things! I watched years ago (13+) and haven't since. I remember cursing and being 3 hours late to work when I lived in Brighton though (I did drive by some runners trying to get to Newton).
  • DH and I took the day off last year to go watch just for fun.  We didn't know anyone running.
  • I try to avoid crowds like that like the plague. We caught part of it a couple of years ago, though, when we went to the Patriots day Sox game.

  • Our office is not far from the finish line.  We have a team of 7 (not me) who run.  There are online trackers to track individual runners by number The rest of the office will go down to the finish line to cheer as our group come in.  Most arrive within an hour of each other.   We also help to get them home after they clear the officials because they are so exhausted after the race.
  • We've been lucky, our work is right on 135 in Natick, so we been watching them every year since we moved to MA.  It's a pretty casual day at the office, and we bring out the grill and cook out.  We've even had a guy run up 2 years in a row for a hotdog....didn't see him this year though.

It was a little cold and windy this year, but a lot of fun, and it's our company's last year at this location....and hopefully my last working at this company Wink

  • cwbykitty, that sounds like a lot of fun!

  • One of my friends from my masters program lives on Beacon St so she had a little GTG last year for the parade. I went because DH was working and I was off but it really wasn't much fun. I'm glad I saw the marathon once I guess and it was fun to watch the runners at the front come through but it was just such a drunk-collegekid-fest- including most of the people at this GTG. I guess I'm just kind of over the whole "let's try to sneak our alcohol into Dunkin Donuts coffee cups so the cops don't see" thing. It seemed like it was more about the drinking than about the marathon. Maybe I'm just old.
  • Have I ever run it?

Oh Rock. You kill me. I nearly peed from laughing so hard.

Hee! A couple of years ago, a girl I was working on a program with was running the marathon the next week. Which is, of course, all anyone would talk to her about. So at lunch one day, someone turned to me and said, "oh, are you a runner, too?" And after I composed myself, I said, "is someone chasing me?"

Frankly, I don't even like to drive 26 miles some days, never mind run them! (Or crawl them, who am I kidding?)
