Pig Relay

Anyone ever run this?  I am the 4th leg and do not want to sit around for 3 or 4 hours waiting to run.  It sounds like you have to meet the bus by at least 7:20am.  Has anyone ever run it?  Do you know if you can just get dropped off at your starting point or do you have to ride the bus?

TIA.

Re: Pig Relay

  • I have done the relay twice and both times I was the 4th leg. You should definitely ride the bus - pretty much all the streets surrounding that area are going to be closed because of the race. It might be possible to get dropped off somewhere, but you would probably have to walk a ways and the logistics could get pretty stressful on that.

If it is the same this year as the previous 2 times I have done it (2007 and 2009), the 4th leg starts right at a church on Eastern Ave. That church has always opened on that day. They set up TVs inside (and show local coverage of the Pig), provide snacks and beverages, as well as give you access to their restrooms. So you can kill time that way. A lot of people bring their MP3 players or other things to help pass the time. Honestly, it never seemed that long to me, because the race is running right by there and I just always found that fun to watch. You get to see the leaders pass, then they always announce when the female leader is coming through, the first wheelchair, etc. So it's a fun atmosphere.

From what I have heard, the waiting area for the 4th leg is the best of all of them. Sorry I wrote a book. I am running the half this year, but I LOVE the relay!

  • You'll have too much fun watching the race to notice the wait. DD and I stood out on the course a couple years ago and we spent 2 hours out there but it felt like 30 minutes. It was fun.

Good luck you two! I'll either be out on the course with a newborn or in the hospital recovering (the baby is due May 2nd), but you'll have a blast.

  • I did the 4th leg last year and first, let me say it was the best run! The crowd support across the 4th spot is FANTASTIC!!

Last year, my H dropped me off about 1.5 blocks from the starting point. We had to cut across a little area that I didn't like too much, but he walked me there so I couldn't complain. I'll try and find out where that was and how we got there for you. It was pretty seamless for us.

I will say, to me, while it was exciting, it did seem like a long wait. We discussed paces and times ahead of the race, so I had an idea of when to expect my exchange to come along. Even with that, they were about 30 minutes behind what they estimated.
