I might vote for a Republican

for our at large city council race. He's a bicycling-advocate, pro gay marriage, pro choice and is running a really aggressive outreach campaign.

Because DC isn't actually allowed to run itself we have two city council seats set aside for non-majority party members.  So this guy's opponents include two former Democrats who switched their registration to Independent, the incumbent R who lost in the primary and is running as a viable write in candidate and the Statehood Green Party candidate.

Re: I might vote for a Republican

  • I voted for a Republican in a local election. ?I think he'd originally been D and his opponent had originally been R. ?I can't remember exactly, but it was a weird situation where they pretty much identified with the opposite party. ?Local politics can differ quite widely from national platforms, so I never vote party in them.

  • I realize for party hacks, voting across party lines is sacrilige (sp) but if a candidate supports things that are important to you, I think it's smart. I wish more people did it and I wish people didn't get so blinded by the party system that they are willing to vote for bad candidates just to stay within their party. Better to focus on what's good for the community than a party, IMO.
  • I'm a DC voter and a Democrat and am planning on voting for the candidate you are talking about! ?I support his positions on some key issues. ?And for a position on the Council I think the most important thing is having people in there that are dedicated and ready to do the work to make the city better and Mara strikes me as such.

  • I have voted across party lines in the past and see no reason not to in the future.
  • I usually vote Repub on local levels.  I live in the Philadelphia area and the Dem party has been in power here for too long and has too little to show for it.

  • This is hardly the first time I'll vote for an R, when I lived in IL I regularly voted for R's at the local level, because I personally knew the candidates. I just find this one funny because he's so stridently pro gay marriage and pro choice that in many parts of the countries Dem politicians would run away from him, I can't even imagine the Republican party response in most jurisdictions!

Sue--do you think he can win? My husband and I have been arguing about this. He's convinced an R can't win this year. But Michael Brown can't win anything, man's been running for city council it seems like forever. And I highly doubt Mark Long can get it, nor Carol's write in campaign (although as Tony Williams and Marion Barry proved, the write in campaign can work, at least in DC).

I honestly don't know. ?I've seen so many signs for him, I feel like he must have good support. ?I don't think Carol's write-in campaign stands a chance.?
