Nail salon- Shellac manicure?

I'm looking for a nail salon that has Shellac- any you recommend?  Price?

I've seen places charge as little as $25, and up to $40.  Of course I'd prefer the former over the latter!

TIA.

Re: Nail salon- Shellac manicure?

  • Shellac is awesome. Ruby Nails in Grandville. I think they charge $30. They do a really nice job and are pretty gentle when removing the polish as well.
  • Elements on Plainfield does them. I think they are around $30.
  • WHAT EXACTLY IS THIS?

    WHAT EXACTLY IS THIS?

A specific type of base, color and top coat nail polish that becomes so freakin' hard that it lasts for at least 2 weeks.  After application all the coats are cured with a UV light.  I think only straight acetone can get it off your nails.  It is hardcore nail polish!

    Is that good or bad?

Are you asking about the acetone or UV?

Straight acetone is rough on your skin. The company that makes the polish does make little sheets of acetone that can applied right on the nail so it doesn't touch your skin. But that doesn't mean the nail salon you go to will offer you that.  Most likely it will be a bowl of acetone that your finger tips will need to soak in. Not ideal.

Increased exposure to UV (most likely UVA) light can be bad for you.  This is the same type of lighting used in tanning beds - so there is the risk of an increase in chance of skin cancer.  You can always ask your manicurist to let you put sunscreen on your hands before they start painting.  They can remove it from your nails, but your skin will be protected from the light.

I'm not as concerned about these issue as i don't do these manicures all that often. Plus, the regular nail polish you normally get at salons isn't all natural and healthy either!! Everything in moderation though.

  • Thanks so much for your response!

Does Ruby Nails charge to have the Shellac removed?  And do they have the little sheets of acetone, or do you have to soak?

I have a friend who says she can peel the polish off the whole nail like a sheet...IDK, I've never had it before but am very intrigued as manicures usually don't last more than a couple days at best for me.
