So today just keeps getting shitttier. The puppy is in the hospital, it's coming up on the one year anniversary of my dad and my mom's birthday on thursday.
So, backstory. Thursday is my mom's birthday and Friday is the one-year anniversary of my dad's death. My mom, aunt, and I were going to go up to Mille Lacs, stay at the casino and then go visit the cabin they grew up in. (They spent summers at the cabin with their mom and their dad came up on weekends). Well, my aunt dropped the ball and didn't make the reservation like she was supposed to, so there's no rooms at the casino. The only other hotels in the area are little fishing and hunting motels, basically.
So, i need something awesome and somewhat luxurious to do with my mom on her birthday to distract her any tiny amount that the next day is the shiitstorm day that it is.
Re: Help!
graves hotel for a night with massages? a cute bed and breakfast?
I can probably come up with some things if I know a little more about which direction you'd like to go. Are you wanting to go to Mille Lacs still or is more local ok?
Mille lacs still, because they want to visit the cabin. All I know about Mille Lacs is there's a lake.
What about Eddy's? Anyone ever stayed there?
There might still be a cancellation at the casino and you could still get a room there. I'd call them every day just to check.
Is the cabin right on Mille Lacs? Is Brainerd too far away? What about the casino in Hinckley?
I was going to mention this. I stayed there years ago with a boyfriend. We had a suite with a heart shaped hottub (cheesy, I know). It wasn't the nicest place ever, but definitely wasn't nasty. I'd say its worth a shot.
ETA: just looked on tripadvisor and Eddy's got 4 really bad reviews. Sorry.
If you don't mind a bit of driving, Ruttger's Bay Lake Lodge is pretty decent. It's about a half hour from Mille Lacs casino, so depending on what direction the cabin is in it might not be too bad.

They have a variety of lodging options, from basic hotel-style rooms to upscale condos. There is an Aveda spa onsite as well.
Otherwise, yeah - there are several options in the Brainerd area. Grandview Lodge, Breezy Point, Craguns... although Craguns is kind of a dump, IMO.

Great a/s on 11/16/12 - It's a girl!
the cabin is in Aitkin. I don't know the area at all, so I have no idea what's close to that.
Whitefish Lodge & Suites is about 50 minutes away from Aitkin according to google maps.

DH and I stayed there and it was a lot of fun. There wasn't much to do in Crosslake, you'd really have to go to Brainerd for activities (shopping etc) and the three locations (Brainerd, Aitkin & Crosslake) are nowhere near eachother really.
I think you need to give your Aunt the side-eye a little for not making a reservation. :-P
Ditto mefindlay, I'd keep trying the hotel. There's got to be a cancellation. Can you get any hotel rooms for the Casino through any travel websites? I don't book hotels often so I'm not sure if they offer some rooms to websites like that even though they say they're "full".
I think a massage or a mani/pedi would be great too!
Izatys looks like it's about 15 minutes from the casino and gets good reviews on trip advisor.
I was in Aitkin for a few hours after totaling my car. I don't remember a hotel or anything else that would scream birthday fun. (And to give you an idea of how small and boring the town must be, the accident report had the location as Hwy 169 at Bessie Sims driveway. Bessie came out and gave us lemonade. I think she also called friends because by the time we left, there was a crowd of people sitting on her front porch watching the cars being towed away).
Tired after a long morning of hiking and swimming.
Hello!
Sorry I am late to the "party," but, if you wanted to extend your festivities a little more, there is a very quaint (and good) local theatre located in Osseo, MN. The Yellow Tree Theatre. http://www.yellowtreetheatre.com/
They put on really great plays and musicals and the tickets are really reasonable ($20 each). Their next production is a musical that opens this Friday, April 22!
As far as lodging around Aitkin, here was a good website if you wanted to take a look at:

Osseo to Aitkin? Why the helll didn't I think of that!?!?!!
Oh. That's why.
