hi there,
i currently am in iowa but my familly is considering moving to raleigh. can anyone recommend good websites for information on good places to move (neighborhoods), how to find a job, schools, etc? it's my husband, myself, and our 14 month old son. we have 3 cats & a dog. any information you can provide on resources as well as your thoughts & feedback would be greatly appreciated.
also, i googled getting to the mountains & ocean and it looks like it takes 3-5 hours to get there- is that correct?
thanks,
Shea
Re: moving to raleigh?!
DH and I moved here last year and we LOVE it here. You're right on being between the beach and mountains, the weather is very mild all year long, the cost of living is low, and this is generally a wonderful area.
What sort of jobs are you looking for? People here say the economy is "bad," but I am from Michigan and honestly Raleigh seems like the land of plenty compared to the north/midwest. I'd make sure at least one of you has a job lined up before moving here, but that shouldn't be too hard.
Most of Raleigh seems like a giant suburb, but there is a small downtown area with skyscrapers. If you're looking for a "white picket fence" type suburb check out Cary and Wake Forest.
All schools in NC are county based, so you're most likely looking at Wake County Public Schools. They get a bad rap as being "controversial" because they are currently in the progress of rezoning the schools and deciding if they want to bus kids around to even out each school's pupils socio-economically. The chaos should die down within the next year or so, and it would not deter me from enrolling my kids in public schools. I actually teach at a charter school and many parents seem to prefer charter and private schools in this area, but I think the public schools are not bad compared to others I have seen in other cities and states.
Let us know if you have more questions. There's a ton of Raleigh nesties around.
