Nephew update - keep the vibes coming!

My nephew's surgery was today. Started this morning - around 10, I think - and was supposed to wrap up around 5.  But because it took longer to go in, and the tumors were bigger and had their own blood supply (complicates things), it took much MUCH longer and didn't wrap up until 9 or so.

Because my nephew was under/sedated for so long, they wanted to keep him sedated overnight - and because the surgery took longer than expected and there was more blood loss, there was more trauma and they expect that it could take several days for him to come out of sedation.

There was also something that happened that will cause some sort of weakness on one side of his body (doesn't sound like a stroke though) - but overall, the surgeon, while completely exhausted, was confident about things.

Please keep those vibes and prayers coming so that he is able to come out of the sedation easily. I know my sister and her husband are anxious to see him and be able to hold/comfort him.  I also know they are probably a bit worried because the last time their son was so heavily sedated (medically induced coma due to high fever and seizures) it took longer than expected for him to wake up.

All in all - things are good. Stressful, but everyone is optimistic for the best possible outcome.

  • aw man, stay strong little guy! there is lots of love and healing thoughts coming your way!

(and big big hugs for auntie laura)

  • Thanks, Ladies!! I really appreciate it!

No new news yet. I know my sister is spending the morning at home with the younger children and then going back to the hospital so her husband can come home and get some rest. I don't know if they anticipate my nephew waking today or what the deal is, but I'll certainly update this if there is any news.

One funny thing - my sister saw him as they were bringing him out of surgery and she commented that she was so happy they didn't completely shave his head! He has thick hair and I know in the weeks leading up to the surgery, she had been hesitant to cut it because she thought it would all soon be gone and she wanted to treasure as much of it as possible . . . but it seems they were able to perform the surgery without shaving it all (I'd assume a little patch must have been cleared, right?). Oh, how it is the little things in life that bring joy . . . .

  • Thanks for the update, sounds like a tough day for nephew.  T&Ps with you and the family!
  • Continued thoughts and prayers!

  • Hi all~

My nephew is still recovering from surgery - but so far all things indicate that it was a success! One little problem however - -  I guess he has two drains that were put in - one at surface and one in the center of his brain where the tumor was. The surface one is working, however the one deeper in his brain is not. It is there to relieve pressure and to give readings/information on how that area is healing and responding - but it isn't doing that - or anything. HIs brain can maybe drain the fluid itself - however the problem isn't just that it isn't working, it's that it is all out stuck! Thankfully, the Doc doesn't seem too concerned about it in the grander scheme of things . . .

SO - he'll have to have another minor surgery to either remove the drain or completely or replace it.  Replace it if his body doesn't drain the fluid - or remove it if his body does drain it and it is no longer needed. Fingers crossed that it is the latter and not the former!

He is also awake now and not happy about being covered in monitors and wires - so he is restrained. But he is a 9 year old boy and still pretty strong and has managed to rip out a few wires!  Plus he is thirsty and hungry but got sick when he had some juice and presumably can't handle solid flood yet. Poor kiddo!

But on the bright side, he has movement on both sides and is even "talking" like he did before the surgery. If you recall, the fact that he uses words to communicate is a HUGE leap for him this year and my sister was so worried that the surgery would erase all his verbal progress. But that doesn't seem to be the case. Yay!!

So all is good- with the exception of that troublesome drain. They'll probably have to be in the hospital a little longer because of it, but he is awake and responsive and their doctor seems very pleased with everything so far.

Please keep the prayers/vibes/thoughts coming - they have been wonderful so far!  Thank you Thank you Thank you!!
