WWYD: Job related

First of all, thank you ladies so much for your support about my temp job being extended.  Reading all of your replies put such a big smile on my face.

Now here comes a curve ball.  Yesterday when I got home I checked my email and had received one from a job I applied to last week.  It is a biotech company and they were asking if I could do a phone interview today.  I had my phone interview this morning and it went well so they asked me to come in for an in person interview on Thursday afternoon.  The job would pay several dollars an hour more plus I?d get pretty nice benefits right away, but the downfall would be that it?d easily be an hour or more commute both ways as it is heading towards DC.  I talked to Jason about it last night and he said he didn?t think the commute would be worth it, but I feel like a permanent position with benefits is better than a temporary position anyway, especially when I have no guarantee that I?ll eventually get hired on as permanent at Cit Mortgage.  I am obviously going to go to the interview but if I happen to get offered the job, I?m not sure what to do.  What would you do?  Would you take the higher paying job w/benefits that?s further away or would you stick with a job you know you like but don?t have any benefits or guarantee that you?ll get hired on?

Also, they said they require a background check (which I assumed they would) and a credit check.  I?ve never worked at a place that required a credit check before.  My credit isn?t great but isn?t the worst of the worst either (I was able to buy a car myself as well as get approved for our apartment based on my score).  I messed up in my late teens/early 20?s, but got everything paid off a couple years ago, so now it?s just a waiting game for it to drop off.  Do you think a not so great credit score would make or break a job offer?

Re: WWYD: Job related

  • First off, congrats!!  They always say when it rains, it pours!

    A few questions:

    1. Job #2 - is it something you're interested in?  What's the likelihood you'd like it more than current temp job?

    2. Financially - sounds like the $/hr is great, but for both jobs, I'd sit down and figure out what it'll cost you to commute and subtract that from a days worth of pay to figure out what you're daily pre-tax income would be.  If it's more per hour, but double the distance, it that aspect the jobs sound like they could be about equal.

    3. If the temp job does offer to bring you with on the move, is there any possibility of being hired fulltime?

    4.  Since it's temp, I'm guessing it doesn't offer benefits, but does the temp job offer benefits?  If not, how are you currently being covered?

  • 1)  I think I?d be interested in it.  It?s for a company that makes antibodies, aids screening kits, etc.  So I feel like it?d be an interesting place to work.  I basically like my current job so much because my boss? leave me alone.  I get my assignment each month and work at my own pace, so it?s just a very chill work environment.  It?s not like I find the mortgage world thrilling or anything, it?s just an easy relaxing job.

    2)  I agree, my suv stinks when it comes to gas, and heading down towards DC is a lot of stop and go traffic so I wouldn?t get good mileage at all.  I requested $3 more per hour than I currently make but they offer up to $5 an hour more based on experience.  I think if I were to get the $3 an hour more, it?d be about equal to what I am making now when I consider what I?d be spending on gas.  However, once my current company moves, I?d have to deduct more for gas too so I might end up making more at job #2 still despite the gas.

    3)  There is a chance that I could be hired on full time after the move.  My boss said a position would open up once they got settled, but there?s no guarantee I?d be the one they hired, ya know?  I hate not knowing on a day to day basis if I?ll have a job tomorrow.

    4)  You are correct, my temp job doesn?t offer any benefits.  Right now neither Jason or I have insurance because his job doesn?t offer benefits either.  He also has diabetes so we are currently paying $60.00 per vile of insulin for him out of pocket, and 1 vile might last a week and a half-2 weeks at the most.  We also pay $1 per test strip for him; when he had insurance he?d test himself 8-10 times a day but now that we?re paying for the test strips ourselves, he only tests himself once or twice because they are so expensive.  I also don?t get any kind of paid time off or holidays through the temp agency.

I?m not counting my eggs before they hatch, for all I know I could interview and never hear from them again, but it?s just got me thinking about jobs in general since I?ve been applying to so many places.

  • With all you've said, if you're willing to spend the time on the commute and don't think that will affect your relationship with Jason in any kind of negative way, I think I would be eagerly awaiting your in-person interview with job #2.

Especially with the insurance and knowing that it would benefit you and especially Jason with diabetes.  Lord forbid something happen to either of you, especially any complications with diabetes, it would be scary to come up with that kind of money out of pocket.  My gma has diabetes and has come across a few complications in the past (minimal things, but even like switching insulin, increasing doses, etc), and I think it'd be nice to have peace of mind of insurance to help cover.  However, I'm a perpetual worry-wort!

Would you consider trading in SUV for more fuel efficient car?

I'd take it a day-at-a-time. Go in for the interview, and have the do all the background checking. And see if they offer you the position. If they do...it may be worth it to take it. If anything, for the benefits alone.

I know when I head into Boston I drive to a train station about 1/2hr outside the city and just take the train in. Would you be able to do something like that? Would it save you money at all vs. going through gas? And would the new job maybe cover the train pass?

Just an idea. But having a F.T. job may be better than a temp. Especially if you think you may find the work more exciting.

  • Since it sounds like they are both jobs you'd like equally, I'd go for the definite job with benefits.  The peace of mind (both knowing you have a job and with health insurance) will be worth it.  I'd trade in your car for something more fuel efficient.

  • All very good points Hannah.  Thanks so much; I'm starting to get excited for the interview now.

I don't think it would affect our relationship in a negative way, if anything it might help it some because money wouldn't be so tight.  He has to be at work an hour before I do in the mornings now so we wouldn't miss any time together in the mornings, I'd just get home later than I do now, but that'd give him some guy time to play video games etc before I got home.

You aren't a worry-wort at all.  People with diabetes take longer than the average person to recover from the smallest things so insurance is definitly something we both want/need, especially for him.  I worry about it a lot so I know having insurance would give me a peace of mind,

I don't think I'd trade my SUV in.  I just bought it less than a year ago after having 2 smaller cars before.  It's a Ford Escape so it's not a giant suv or anything, but still drinks gas like it's water, but I think I'd rather pay more money in gas than go back to a little civic like I had before...especially after totaling my civic; I feel safer in a bigger car.

  • If you think the 2nd job is something that would be interesting, I would take it.  There's nothing better than having a permanent job with benefits.

How far is Jason from his job? Would the two of you consider getting a new apartment part way between your two jobs to cut down on the commute?

Jason's job is less than 5 miles from our current apartment.  We do plan on moving to a larger apartment once our lease is up in December, but the closer you get to DC, the more expensive the apartments get.  So even if we were half way between jobs, we'd be paying a good bit more for an apartment and then would both have to be paying for gas.

Blah, I'm sick of being a grown up lol.

I vote for this. Insurance can be invaluable. Plus, as you know, your temp-permanent is not guaranteed at Citi. I'd go to the interview & see what happens.

Also, I HAVE had credit checks done on me for jobs. It's really done to make sure your credit is not SUPER SUPER low that you would be liable of stealing from the company. I think (probably) that if you could recently finance a car, you'll be fine.
