Southwest Des Moines

I was house hunting online just for fun (kind of) and I did a search for Southwest DSM and I found some fabulous home for really great prices! Does anybody live in this area? Do you like it?

I love the Beaverdale area because there is so much to do and the sense of community is great, but when we buy our next house we want a large wooded lot and a house with lots of space for not a lot of money and it seems like the SW can offer that to us.

Re: Southwest Des Moines

  • ME!!

I live off of Watrous and SW 14th Close to Wakonda Golf Course. I LOVE our area. It's old and great!

We have a huge lot, we're close to a park, and close enough to downtown that we can hear the fireworks from the baseball field on Fridays. We're close to Gray's Lake, that we park on the back end and can walk to the ball feild,

Also, we're not far from Fleur, and Fleur takes you everywhere, I usually take Fleur to Park to get to 63rd to go to WDM.

Basically we're like 20min from everything. I love it!

  • Ha! Shea just told me you live in that area. :-)

What do you think of the schools?

  • Jefferson is the school we'd send Ella to if we are still there by the time she's in school. It's one of the few that is really good, it recv'd a 10 out of 10rating and I'm 99% sure you have to be put on the waiting list to join it.

There is a decent middle school off Park, UM, I'm not sure of the name right now. And Lincoln is a good high school, my nephew has excelled at sports there, so they have a great sports program, my other nephew is in 9th grade, and he's already taking senior level classes, (a little brag there lol) so they know when a child is not being challenged enough.

Personally I think the south side gets a bad rap. There are great schools, and awesome homes, it's just a matter of people finding them and going there.

We plan on moving further south, in the next few years, I am a country girl through and through, and my parents have given us about 10achers, so It's just a matter of us selling our house and putting up a ranch.

  • I live on the Southeast side of Des Moines (between Evergreen and Park Ave.) and I love it. I grew up on the SS of DSM, and it's the only place that felt like "home" when looking/buying a home.

Victoria is probably thinking of Brody Middle School. Weeks Middle School is also off of Park (that's where I went) but it's not the same as when I went there. My mom pulled my little brother (14yo) out of Weeks to send him to Brody. He absolutely loves it.

I also attended Lincoln, along with my 2 older sisters, 2 younger brothers, and the youngest brother will also attend there.

Like Victoria also mentioned it's pretty close to everything (Indianola, Carlisle, Norwalk, WDSM, downtown etc.) since you can hop on the by-pass.

I also believe the SS gets a bad rap, and get upset when people give me the stink-eye for living there. We have some hidden gems over here- like Easter Lake! Yes, there's some lower income housing areas, but WDSM, Valley Junction, and other areas also have their fair share of those too.

  • I have two friends who live out by Easter Lake and they both love it.  Great neighborhoods (two separate ones) and they will go to Carlisle schools so that helped ease their minds as they were intimidated by the Des Moines school district.

You live close to my daycare! :) she's off of SE22nd! On Riverwoods Dr!

What year did you graduate? I have some friends that graduated in '99 and '01

I too get upset, when it gets the stink eye! I went to Indianola, but hung out on the SS, as well. I grew up 4miles south of southridge mall.

As you probably know, you can get to any part of the  DSM by taking side streets! LOL! And I've learned more since my Hubs works for the city! He probably plowed your streets!

My mom also does daycare on the SS so I may just know of yours since she's friends with quite a few of them :)

I graduated in '06 but I think my oldest sister graduated around '00 or '01

Park Ave, Army Post, 14th, and Fleur can get you pretty much anywhere and everywhere!

  • Her name is Alicia Hedgecock. Her mom does daycare too.

My H also went to LHS, but he graduated in '96.

I totally agree with you on 'feeling at home' there. H had his house before we dated, and I was totally ok with moving in there, because I felt I knew the area!

    The name sounds very familiar.

We looked at houses in Urbandale, Johnston, etc. but nothing "clicked". So we ended up buying a house 1/2 mile from my parents house where I grew up! Haha

We have friends that live down the street from Victoria and I love their neighborhood. They definitely got more home for the money than I was finding when we were looking for a home in Beaverdale. The only thing that would deter me is the airplane noise.

The ONLY time I notice it is when the weekend warriors are out, and when Obama was here, they had planes circling when air force one was landing. It was a constant plane sound, that's the only time we noticed.

I think it's something you learn to block out.

OH a bonus to that is, we're on the air ports power supply so we never lose power :) LOL
