Who recommended Birch and Barley in DC to me?
....Because it was AWESOME! One of the best meals I can remember having. Ever. I mean it. Totally hit the spot after a day of romping around the Smithsonian museums. Upscale dining but not pretentious. Amazing beer list. Everything we ate was to die for. Service was unbeatable and super-friendly. We may have spent close to three hours there stuffing our faces and drinking multiple beers before strolling back to the home, because, oh yeah, great job recommending something walking distance from our hotel, too
So a huge thank-you to whoever it was! Best meal we ate all trip.
Re: Who recommended Birch and Barley in DC to me?
I think it was me; we went in Feb for a weekend and found Birch and Barley to be awesome!!!!!! So awesome that, to us, it is worth a 3 hour drive down and back in the same day (problem is, finding a driver for the trip home).
Did you stay at the Helix just down the block?
cand - we should have better coordinated and done lunch together one day
Sunday was awesome...Birch and Barley made the Saturday monsoon so much more bearable. (Thank you, Smithsonian, for giving us great indoor things to do!)
erbur - I am also thinking it would be worth a three-hour drive to do again
SO delish! What did you eat? We went with their charcuterie board to start (YUM...I am so glad I ate first and asked questions later, because the pate and the pig's head terrine were the best); Col had the brat burger and I had the tagliatelle pasta with mini carrots and rabbit and the house-made ricotta cheese, which was insane. We finished up with the "cookies and confections" dessert - so much fun. I am drooling just remembering it.
We went the Saturday before Valentine's Day and sat at the bar, which was perfect. (We usually like to sit at the bar when trying out a new beer destination--sitting with the bartender usually has its perks!).
Mr erbur ordered the Butcher's Board and I selected the Slow-Roasted Pork Belly. OMG! Loved it! We were shocked at the bread/pretzels that arrived mid-way through our appetizers. I ordered the entree-sized portion of the Vialone Nano Risotto (beet risotto with goat cheese). This was very rich and filling. So rich, that I could only finish 3/4 of it because I wanted to save room for dessert. The mr also ordered the brat burger and really enjoyed it, but he wasn't crazy about the roll, he thought it was a little too dry (he's a roll snob, I think).
Our dessert sampler featured: cashew snickers bar, mint chocolate chip ice cream, B&B's version of a Hostess choc cupcake, oatmeal raisin sandwich cookie, s'mores brownie with toasted marshmallow on top, and a mini-pudding pop.
We drank: Climax Hoffman Doppelbock, Moylander Double IPA on cask, Yeti Espresso Oak Aged Stout, Double Trouble, Taste of Charlie 1991, Hercules IPA.
