transition from formula to milk/bottles to sippies

we go to the pedi next week, but what was your transition process?  some of my friends said they did everything cold turkey and some did more of a drawn out process.  just like to hear different ways!  thanks.

mine are drinking water/juice out of sippies right now.  that is as far as we have gotten!

Re: transition from formula to milk/bottles to sippies

  • Macy had no problem switching from Formula to Milk.  I thought I would phase whole milk in but we were able to switch cold turkey.  Surprisingly.  However, she won't drink milk out of a sippy cup.  She has no problem using the sippy cup for juice or water, but the second she takes a sip and realizes it's milk she spits it out and hands me back the sippy cup.  And gives me the look of "I don't think so".

I really need to get her off the bottle, but we haven't been successful :(

    Baby Macy is here!

  • We had a little bit of trouble getting Isaiah to learn how to use the sippy cup.  So, we started with water in the sippy, or some juice and let him get used to it.  Then once he had mastered it (we tried a few different brands) then I gave him the milk in it.

He was never a kid who HAD to have a bottle at bedtime, so it wasnt hard for him to switch.  It was just getting used to the sippy that was more difficult.

  • I think once you have crossed over from bottle to sippy, the transition is much easier than you expect.  I started mixing it in w/DD's breast milk or formula, and just balancing the ratios up and down.  It took us about 3 days to switch her over to 100% whole milk.  The kid is a milk HOUND now.

This is us, too. She only gets 2 bottles of whole milk now...one in the morning upon waking up and a bedtime bottle.

  • If I remember right, I started the formula to milk transition a little slow for like the first week.  I would mix it the milk with the formula.  After that we went to strictly milk.

The sippy cup transition was pretty easy for us.  They were a little resistant to the milk in a sippy at first but it didn't take long to switch them completely.  I used the Nubby brand ( I think thats the name..) so the spouts were still rubbery like a bottle and I think that helped as well!

  • DD wanted nothing to do with a bottle at 10.5 months so we started putting formula in a sippy cup for her and it worked out great. When it was time to stop formula she was already fighting us on it so we just switched right over to milk in the cup. Or pedi did say it was easiest to do 1 day of half formula half milk then just milk after that.

Have you tried using a different kind of sippy cup for her milk, like a clear cup so she can see its milk and/or a different type of spout (hard, soft, or the straw type cup)?

P has a hard spout cup for her milk but will not drink water or juice out of those cups so we have soft spout cups for all things not milk.

  • We in the battle for transitioning to milk right now.  She hates milk.  But the dr suggested flavoring which is working right now for us.

If they are not having a problem with the sippie then they shouldn't have a problem drinking formula/milk from a sippie.
