Higher Ed - Enrollment Management

I work in admissions/enrollment management at a large private university.  We get free tuition so I want to take advantage and take free courses.  I am just not sure what direction to go.

I have a Masters in Public Service - Higher Ed Administration

Do I pursue an MBA? If so, what focus/concentration?
OR do I go towards the Counseling Side with the School of Education.

My husband said BOTH so that wasnt much help.  His thoughts are that I plan on being there long enough so that I should just start with the MS/MED in Counseling and at the same time start studying for the GMAT so that once I finish the program I can go into the MBA.

SO, considering I just want to take it one degree at a time, which degree do you think would benefit me the most?

Re: Higher Ed - Enrollment Management

  • What do you want to do? Do you see yourself staying in enrollment management or are you just doing this b/c its free? If so then the MBA might be the way to go. IT also depends on what type of institution you want to work at.

IF you see yourself going over to the student side ( i.e. advising) then I think the counseling is the best bet.

I have my Master in Higher Education Administration & Student Personnel, so I got a little of of both ( admin and counseling) although I wasn't really into the business side. I did my "minor/concentration" in counseling although I'm not eligible to sit for any licensing exam.

  • I work in admissions/recruitment at a large public university and I know most people here in my department do their MS/MED. My boss has her MBA but she is much more on the financial side of things than the student side.

But I agree with the PP, if you aren't planning in staying in enrollment management forever, your MBA is probably the way to go. Although...honestly, I think a lot of time it has more to do with you having the degree than what the degree really is..at least in this profession.
