Switching electric company question-

Have any of you done it? What do I need to watch out for? I was just looking online and it looked like I could save a few hundred a year if I switched but I keep worrying there is some kind of catch.  I know some are fixed v. variable costs so I'm keeping an eye on that but other than that, what should I know????

Thanks!!!

Re: Switching electric company question-

  • Do not sign a contract.   Do not get locked in to a set term or price.  Make sure you can go back to PECO at any time.

Other than that - it's pretty easy.   You are still serviced by Peco, billed by Peco, etc.. You won't notice a difference other than the savings on your bill every month.

I switched to Viridian a few months ago and also began selling for them as well.  They are 20% renewable green energy, which is more than the state mandated 9% renewable energy, which is why I like them.

  • so I want a variable price?? that seemed more risky to me. When I am looking at the site the cheapest one for me seems to be Ambit Electric.  If we chose to go with Viridian do you want me to contact you so you can get the credit?

  • The thing with fixed prices is that energy prices are always changing..So let's say you signed up at 9 and then prices drop the next month to 8,  If you had locked at at 9, you'd be paying more than the variable rate folks.  Granted it should all even out eventually, but I personally would go with a variable rate.

PM me if you want to sign up with Viridian after doing your research and I'll give you my link.  Also if you sign up by the end of April you get a promo of 10% of your total first bill with them.

  • I don't know I ton about this, but DH looked into this for us.  One thing he did notice was that if you have electric heat (we have a heat pump), PECO was one of the only companies that discounted for electric heat in the winter.  So ... just one more variable to throw in there.
  • we have gas heat but that is really good to know to tell my family! Thanks for the heads up!

  • Very true.  This is not good for electric heat users because they get off peak hours.  For gas or oil it's fine though - and actually Viridian is soon going to be offering gas as well at a discounted rate on the same bill, like Peco.
  • any idea when that will be? i am wondering if i should wait to change until I can compare that as well.

  • Probably another couple of months.  You can switch at any time though, so you may as well start saving now and then once gas is an option you can always add it on.
  • good point!
