Gardeners: How's it growing?

Just a few short weeks until my tomatoes, peppers and other summer veg go into the garden & I'm so excited!

This year I finally did a spring garden & I honestly wonder why I didn't do this earlier.  I mean, I threw down a few seeds & let the rain do the rest!  My arugula is going crazy...I'm thinking we'll make something with it this week.

Re: Gardeners: How's it growing?

  • We have green leaf, spinach and romaine coming up right now. I'd say we should be able to eat the spinach in a week or so. DH planted peas a few weeks ago and they're already 4 inches high.

We bought peppers over the weekend that went in on Sunday. We already had a couple of tomato plants and eggplant, which are doing well. DH planted cilantro, which I HATE, and of course, it's growing like a weed (it is a weed, isn't it?)

Let's see...what else? The tomatillo starts should be ready to go in the ground soon. This is the first time we've tried them, so keep your fingers crossed!

  • Awesome!  I'm thinking about doing tomatillos in the future.  I love green salsa!
  • We started patty pan, zucchini, spaghetti squash, sugar snaps and cucumber from seed and transplanted them last weekend.  I know I am late, but I also direct sowed a heat tolerant spinach and swiss chard as well as radishes last week.  I need to start my lettuce late as well.  We put in tomato seedlings two weeks ago that a friend gave us (I'm prepared to cover them if it gets cold).  I need to plant more.  I bought pepper seedlings that haven't made it into the ground yet.  The onions I planted last fall look great.  I put a few sets in this spring as an experiment to see what works better and they caught right up to the fall ones.  With re. to herbs, my oregano and mint and working their way back up, the parsley has spouted but I need to restart the cilantro and basil - I used seed from a few years ago and they haven't sprouted.

Still to do: eggplant (buy), watermelon (seed), cantaloupe (seed), carrots (seed), and raspberries (buy).

  • I was so disappointed when my oncologist said I could not garden this year.  Apparently there is too much fungus in the dirt for someone with a compromised immune system.  I could not stand the thought of not having fresh tomatoes so I am trying 3 topsy turvies and one container plant (my niece came over and planted everything for me).  We'll see how it works....

Good luck with your tomatoes! I never would have imagined that gardening is something that you'd be barred from doing, but I guess it makes sense. Here's hoping your back to gardening in 2012! :)

  • I direct sowed cucumbers, spinach, lettuce, squash, sunflowers, marigolds and zinnia in my SFG the weekend before last.  Nothing sprouting yet.  I'm waiting for it to get a little warmer to plant the rest of the squash.  I still have to till up the area for the corn.  And am waiting for my tomato, bell peppers and sweet potato plants to arrive.

This weekend, we are reseeding our lawn.

My pear and apple trees have a lot of flowers, so I'm hoping I'll get some edible fruit this year.  (And it ripens enough to pick before the animals eat them.)

  • Wow, I'm impressed!  I have my beds ready to go and that's about it...some of the plants I ordered (tomatoes and cucumbers) don't arrive until May 5, and my DH needs to trim some wisteria that's blocking some of my neceesary sunlight.

Lettuce question...when is the best time to plant it?

Lettuce question...when is the best time to plant it?

depends on the type. stuff marked "no bolt" or "summer lettuce" or such can wait a week or two. regular lettuce likes cooler temps, so you're kinda late for that (or, if you don't want heads & just leaf lettuce, if you plant ASAP you might get some before it's too hot)

  • I just blogged some of my garden pictures last night :)

I'm going to have tons of cilantro and dill based on the number of little sprouts I have right now.  I'd really like to plant some greens, spinach and lettuces but we havent gotten there yet
