MoCo Ladies

DH and I are house hunting.  What can you tell me about the Aspen Hill / Wheaton Woods area?  We have a pretty low budget and are relatively new to the area.  We are currently renting in Rockville (King Farm).

I'm in MoCo (Colesville section of Silver Spring) but unfortunately don't really know much about Aspen Hill or Wheaton Woods... but just wanted to say welcome to the board!  Lots of MoCo ladies here, I'm sure some will know the areas.

    Good luck with the hunt!

  • I live in Wheaton and look in the Aspen Hill area when we were house-hunting.  This whole area is very diverse-- some streets are pristine and others are... not.  My neighborhood is definitely full of a variety of different homes.  Some (like mine) are well-cared for and others look like they could collapse at any moment.  Are you looking for a single family home or a townhouse?  How many bedrooms?  There's a cute 2 BR 1 bath across the street from me for $265K, and one down the street with 3 BR and 3 baths for $299K.
  • We live close to that area in Kensington.  We really like our house.  We live on a street where all the houses are different, some streets in our area have houses that are the same brick house with the same layout inside, we did look at a few of them.  When we looked there were a ton of different houses all in the price range we were looking for.  Some had mold, some had swaying floors, some had the kitchen from the 60s still and bathrooms to match, and then there was our house which didn't need any major work and it was move in ready.  I love our little house and the area.  There are a few houses for sale in our neighbor hood if you look up 20895 zip code.  Some look cute.  A lot of them have more room on the inside than you can tell from just looking at the outside.  We just drove through a few neighborhoods with our realtor and stopped at any house that had a long and foster sign :)
  • We live in a townhouse in the Wheaton/Silver Spring area (right near the Wheaton metro) and love it. The neighborhood doesn't have as many great restaurants as Bethesda or downtown Silver Spring do, but both of those places are 15-20 minutes away. There's definitely some sketchy parts of the area north of us, but downtown Wheaton has made some huge improvements over the past few years and there's several restaurants/bars that we love (Limerick Pub, Royal Mile Pub, Nava Thai, Cristina's...).

  • I think Aspen Hill/Wheaton Woods are a bit further north than where we are.  Our DCP lives in that area... parts of it are sketchy, but I find that her house itself is nice and has a nice layout.  I think a lot of those houses are the same floor plan... sort of tri-level, with nice flow inside.

We're a bit further south closer to where the rest of the Nesties on this board live.  I'm happy we bought in our neighborhood, because the Metro is close enough that we can walk (about 20 min walk...)  and our neighbors are nice.

What's your budget, and what are you looking for?

  • Aspen Hill/Wheaton Woods has nicer streets and sketchier streets. There are a lot of houses that have multiple families living in them in that area. We looked at a few streets where there was no parking because so many cars belonged to each house and there were houses that had no yards because they had paved over the whole yard as a driveway! I think like many neighborhoods in MoCo, you have to take it street by street, though.

Like ch ch ch chia I live further south in Wheaton, just a couple of blocks off of University Boulevard and Georgia Avenue. Houses in my neighborhood are definitely becoming more affordable.

If you post your budget and what you are looking for, we can help you find a good neighborhood!
