My poor husband

FYI this may be considered TMI by some...

So I had my first period after coming off the pill this past weekend - and wow - I was super bitchy.  No matter what H said or did (we're generally both pretty sarcastic) it rubbed me the wrong way - I was a total *** all weekend.  As soon as my period ended, it was like night and day - I was in the best mood ever.

Poor guy has never had to deal with me like that before - I've been on BC since I met him and never really had bad mood swings with my period.  I'm hoping it was just extra bad this month and will level out going forward - if not my husband may need to vacation alone once a month ha.

Re: My poor husband

  • I know how that goes... BC or not, I've always had mood swings that are practically uncontrollable :/ At least DH is learning to live with me in my cranky moods.. I'm sure if you've never had them before, it should subside soon. Unfortunately, after getting pregnant, my mood swings were almost constant and I get peeved about even little things sometimes... especially when I can't sleep. I think your DH will be able to live with you :) He married all of you, not just "you when you're not menstruating" ;)

  • Hormonal BC will do that to you! I think I'm starting to get back to normal with regards to the mood swings. But I'm the opposite. I had mood swings like none other while I was on BC. Now that I'm off, I'm definitely a lot more calm and not so likely to fly off the handle about little things.

  • Oh man.. When I got off BCP, I thought DH (then FI) was going to leave me. I was so bitchy -- I snapped at everything.  It was bad.

I found that taking B6 and B12 vitamins helped significantly with PMS symptoms and mood swings.   My doctor recommended it, and I read about it in Marilyn Shannon's book, Fertility, Cycles, and Nutrition. Maybe if the PMS keeps up, something to look into.

And YAY for getting your period!! So FAM is still working for you??

  • That first month off the pill is rough :(  I'm glad you're feeling better.  And I'm sure your H is sympathetic and you weren't nearly as bad as you thought you were.  It'll be okay.

  • I have been on the Pill for 11 years next month, and so I have no idea anymore what I'll be like off of it.  Linds, this is not helping my fears!  lol.  I hope the following months go smoother, and I'm interested to hear (if you don't mind) how things do or do not improve as time goes on.  I want to know what to expect when I finally go off mine.
  • lol just wait til one day you have pregnancy mood swings! it is only preparing him :)

haha JNC dont worry - I was on the pill for 10 years so I know what you mean about not knowing what to expect.  I will say, aside from the crazy PMS it's been great.  I was a bit nervous that I would have some crazy long period without the BCP to regulate it, and it only ended up lasting about 4 days.  Hopefully I'll be as lucky going forward.

Manda dont say that. haha I think he can handle 5-7 days of me snapping at him each month, I'm not sure how he'll handle 9 months ha.

Thanks for the advice - I actually just picked up a new daily vitamin at the pharmacy - it has B-6 and B-12 so maybe that will help next month :)

Aside from my confusing chart last month FAM is working really well for us and I am SO glad I made the leap - its almost like second nature - I haven't missed a single day of taking my temp, which I thought would be a hard adjustment.

Thanks for your encouragement and support!!

  • My periods were long as heck, horribly painful, and thoroughly unpredictable before I went on the Pill....at 19!  There's no telling what my body would do now, but I'm glad to hear the first one wasn't so bad.  I am thinking of switching to an IUD in the next couple months (while I still have insurance that will pay for it!) and I don't know if the hormones in that will affect it.  I guess, between you and Steph, I'll figure it out before making the switch.  Big Smile
  • Linds - oh my dh can sympathize with yours!!!! I have horrid mood swings. Every woman really is different. In my case a couple things are likely going on:

*A luteal phase/progesterone deficiency (charts reveal that phase is too short)

    *A thyroid issue

We've actually gotten to the point where I am on hcg injections (I totally agree with catarntina that the B-vitamins help as well as minerals but that was not enough for me! Depression and anxiety are a huge issue with me, and it can be very, very cyclical). The hcg has really helped... this cyle I was only insane for a few days. :) But thyroid testing is next on the list... women with severe PMS often have a thyroid issue.

I hope it all levels out soon... just know, many of us can relate. And gosh, I feel *horrid* after I've acted that way. Men have to put up with so much lol.

P.s. I am so glad the FAM method is working out so well for you! :)

  • Just one bit of encouragement.... I remember you saying that BCP were making you never "in the mood."  Hopefully, the mood swings in that direction are just as extreme (in a good way) now that you're off them!  My second month off BCP (I'm working on my third), that was definitely the case for me.  I'm loving this FAM stuff too!

  • I can totally relate Linds!  It sounds like your H was supportive.  Men have no idea what this is like!  I was on BCPs for 15 years and February was my first month off.  It was like I wasn't myself.  Before my only symptoms around my period were food cravings & terrible headaches.  That first month I wasn't irritable at H, but at any little thing I would become angry and then really weepy.  I had never been a big crier before.

H just takes each mood swing & helps me through it.  It's gotten better, just know that!
