Something Borrowed the movie

Since we're talking about WFE so much right now, I was wondering if any of you have read Something Borrowed and what you thought about it and then the movie.

I read the whole book Sunday and I have to say I was pretty disappointed.  I wanted to like the characters, but the fact that they're either cheaters or egotistical kinda ruined it for me.  It was the first book in a while that I didn't like.

I'm still going to go see the movie because Im sure it will be a good chick flick, but Im not getting my hopes up.  What do you think?

Re: Something Borrowed the movie

  • i read the book.  i too was unable to sympathize with any of the characters.  i thought the story was okay.  i've read all of emily giffin's books and this isn't my favorite.

i plan on seeing the movie, but don't have high hopes.  i'll take it for what it's likely to be...a typical romantic comedy :)

This. I read Something Borrowed, Something Blue, and Baby Proof. I found all three to be okay... they didn't "wow" me but they were each a fun, mindless read.

I'm going to see the movie. For some reason I feel obligated or something because I read the book. Lol. :)

  • I thought the book was just okay.  I was still mad at Darcy when I read the 2nd book.  I will watch the movie though when it comes out on DVD.

I decided Im not even going to read the second and third books because she was so annoying.

  • I read Something Blue first, so I had a bad take on Rachel when I read Something Borrowed.  (I know, I should've read them in order.)  I plan on seeing the movie, just because I read the books.  Also, I couldn't identify with either character.
  • I am the opposite of you ladies... I actually loved SOBO and SOBL... they are my fave books and I have read them over and over.  I like that she wrote it in a way where I actually wanted Rachel and Dex together cause in real life I would obviously be horrified.  I like things not being so cut and dry as right and wrong.

I like her other books too... I actually went to the HOTM paperback release party in NY and met Emily Giffin.  She is so sweet and nice.

I can't wait for the movie... i have plans with friends to go opening night.

I loved the books, too!  The only one I really didn't care for was Baby Proof.  I really liked Love the One You're With and I think it's because (similar to what you said) she tells the stories in such a way that you can understand these people doing and experiencing things that I could not even imagine doing!

I'll probably watch the movie when it's on DVD but I'm always extra disappointed in the girly books that I like when they're made into movies.  Also, I wish that Kate Hudson was not in the movie.  I'm really not a fan of hers but I like everyone else.

  • It's been awhile since I read it but I remember liking it and the other 2 books.

Laner- let me know when you go see the movie, I want to see it too.

  • Although, I read the books years ago, I remember loving them.  I will definitely see the movie.
  • I got the book years ago but didn't read it b.c. I was trying not to read too many wedding related books.  I read it last year when I was engaged and I liked it.  I didn't like Darcy's character from the get go so that helped me think Rachel and Dex should get together even if it was wrong.  I read SOBL too and liked it.  I also read BP and LTOYW.  I can't wait for the movie...I will probably go with my mom b.c. DH wouldn't like the story.

  • I've really enjoyed all of Emily Giffin's books so far. It's been a while sine I've read Something Borrowed and Something Blue, but I remember hating Darcy in the first book and liking her in the second. I'll definitely see the movie.

All of this! I loved the books and thought they were a fun easy read. I have lent my books to everyone and they have loved them too, including my mom. She asked me to take her to see the movie.....may have to preview it for myself to see what I am in for. (Had to do this with Sex and the City movies!)

  • I am another who has loved all of the Emily Griffin books and can't wait for the movie! My friends and I have also passed her books around and have a big girls' night planned for the movie. Hopefully it won't disappoint!

  • I also read Something Blue before Something Borrowed, but completely by accident so I was actually biased towards Darcy before reading SBo.    I think the casting is odd because I think both actresses are too "cute" for the parts, although I'm loving John Krasinski as Ethan.

I'm planning on seeing this opening night with my girlfriends.

Me too. I've re-read SOBO and SOBL several times and still enjoy them.  I actually just stared re-reading SOBO last night in anticipation for the movie.

I'm excited to see it come to the big screen, but I have a feeling I'll be disappointed.

  • LOVED LOVED LOVED the books. I liked SOBO better than SOBL but loved them both. I am "friends" with Emily Giffin on facebook and she has been talking about this movie since before they casted for it....They are actually planning a SOBL movie too!!

  • I also have thoroughly enjoyed the book. I will go see the movie - however my expectations are pretty low!

I really liked the books too EXCEPT Love the One You're With. I couldn't stand that book. All the should I cheat, should I not crap really irked me.

I'm really excited to see the movie. I'm sure it'll be a great chick-flick! Plus, I love Kate Hudson.

  • I ditto pp on the unsympathetic characters. Something Blue thoroughly annoyed me, her in particular. She seemed unbelievably whiny.
  • OMG i love these books! i have read them multiple times. i'll see the movie for sure but i don't have high hopes because the cast is so not the characters in my head.

i recently read heart of the matter which is about dex's sister tess...SO good but i was pretty mad at her husband the entire time.
