Is it lawn yet?

I finished seeding the new test plot for shade grass yesterday and today. Partly because I want to see what a lawn will look like in my backyard, partly because my pets love grass, partly because parts of my backyard renovation can't be done for another year anyway, and partly because I get a lot of questions about turf grass for shade from my clients.

I did 2 sections, and section one germinated in under 7 days. It's now about 10 days and 2" tall, looking bright green and very fine. I am trying to accelerate the germination time on section 2 by increasing the moisture. I swear I am in the back yard checking that plot 6 times a day. Every time I see my spouse we have a little exchange:

Me: "Did you go outside?" Him: "Yeah, I was out there.' Me: "Did you see a lawn out there?"

I'm a little obsessive.

Re: Is it lawn yet?

  • LOL!  I did this at my last house.  Until my DH said you know a watched yard never grows.  And so I stopped staring.  But I was surprised at how fast once it started growing it really started growing!  GL!
  • LOL!

We're seeding this weekend and our backyard is mostly shade.  I'm open to any advice.  In addition to shade, our yard tends to stay damp due to some irrigation issues that we can't really do anything about (protected watershed area prevents any changes that disrupt the flow of water).

Initial results are very good, but I'll undate again as the season progresses.

  • My husband and I are looking to get a new species of lawn.  We have bermuda, what type did you try? Does it look good?  We want something that will grow fast and stay green in the mild winter
