I am 2 years out of college with a BA in Poli Sci and I currently work as a legal assistant. To keep it short, I hate it and am looking to leave the legal field and really try to find something I can make a career out of/grow with, etc etc. My brother is a Director of HR and absolutely loves everything about HR. Since he is my brother, and we are a lot alike, he has told me I should look into getting an entry level HR position and get a feel for the field.
For those of you in HR, what do you like/dislike about it? How did you get started in the field? Any pointers?
Thanks!
Re: HR careers
The hard part about HR is that people give you really sensitive info and you really have to keep it all to yourself. It's really sort of lonely. You are also the person everyone goes to with problems. The worst part of HR is firing people or doing a mass lay-off. You are pretty much the Grim Reaper with the deadly shoulder tap at that point. Outside of those few factors... it's a great career choice. I started in recruiting and staffing.

In general, I do like HR. But, like PP said, it can be lonely. I am a social person and am always looking for good girlfriends. I feel like I can't become buddies with people at work because if a performance/discipline issue ever were to come up, I'd be involved. I feel like I can't go to happy hours, can't divulge my personal life, need to not get emotionally attached to people.
That being said, I love that I get to know everyone (literally) through recruitment and performance evaluation, and I really like knowing that my job makes a positive impact on their lives.

not every HR professional does this.
there are many facets to HR, including talent and acquisition, benefits, employee relations, and training. an HR professional may do one, some, or all of these things.
OP, good luck with your career search!
I have an HR degree but I'm not really in "HR." I work for a company who does the administration (bookkeeping, tax reporting, etc.) for other companies' 401(k) Plans. I work with the companies' HR people, but I'm not an HR person myself.
Anyway, I do like what I do, so I just thought I'd put it out there that there are companies that do specific HR functions like I do. There are payroll companies, auditors, etc. Just another thing to keep in mind.
Agreed. I'm an HR Specialist rather than a Generalist, and haven't done any employee relations work since grad school. HR is a huge function, with lots of career options.
I have a BA in Anthropology and a Masters in HR. I got into the field by doing an internship while I was in school.
My undergrad degree is in History and Political Science and I have my law degree. I've been in my current position for 3 years and came into in a strange way. I work in a private school and filled in on a maternity leave in the development department before moving over to my current payroll/benefits/HR position.
I don't know that this will be my permanent career, but I certainly have acquired skills that are transferrable to many other professions.
Good Luck!
