Who do you use for Cable/Internet?

DH and I just bought a house! We close on April 29th and need to find a new cable/internet provider. The house is in Plymouth so the main cable company there is Comcast but they seem expensive. I was looking at Dish Network but DH is concerned about losing signal in storms.

So....Who do you use? How much do you pay? Do you like the service? If no, why?

Re: Who do you use for Cable/Internet?

  • For Cable we use Dish Network and pay $30 a month for 120+ channels, which is more than we need!

For Internet, we use Charter and locked in at $40 a month for the next 2 years.

When we purchased our house in January, I was on a mission to get cable and internet for cheaper than we were paying through Comcast at our apartment, which was about $110.  And that was for internet that was slower and less channels.

We've only had Dish since January, but we never lost signal during any of the winter storms.

  • Comcast.  I think we've discussed a few times on this board why they are, without question, The Devil.  But I can't live without my Teen Mom so I sell my soul.

    We're kind of going out.
  • In Bloomington, we have Comcast. Because they are evil but we have no choice.

  • I had Dish and Direct when I lived with my mom and was not a fan.  We lost the signal often.  It was 8 years ago, so I don't know if things have improved.

We use Comcast because it is our only option for cable.  We have the HD tier with 2 HD DVR boxes, home phone (modem fee) and internet (modem fee).  We pay $167 a month.  We were paying $215 until October when I threatened to cancel.  They lowered my monthly payment and gave me Starz. I am planning to cancel our home phone which will save $40/month.  We never use it and noone important calls it.

  • We have Dish for TV and Comcrap for internet.  And yeah, I hate comcast, but what can I do.

FWIW, when we had our dish installed the guy that did it said that the signal loss issue is nearly 100% related to how well (and with how much care) the installer actually positions the dish, regardless of provider.  That said, he must have been good becuase we only loose signal in very severe weather and then we only lose the HD channels, not the SD channels.

  • We have Comcast for internet and Direct TV for cable. I am not happy with Direct TV. We are locked into a contract, and pay a lot of money for really sub-par programming.  We don't have all of the channels I want and I think we pay like $80/month.  Comcast is the only option we have for internet, and I really really hate Comcast.  If I had any other choice out here for high speed internet, I would use it. FWIW, we live in western WI.

  • I'm in St. Paul and we have Comcast, $110/month for cable, internet and phone.  Will probably drop the phone once our 1 yr promo is up....the only reason we got the landline was becasue it was actually a cheaper pkg to have the phone in addition to internet and cable!

If you do have a landline still, you can get inexpensive internet.  I used to have it through usfamily.net.  The only catch is that you need to have a landline for it to run through, even though it's not dial-up and doesn't actully tie up the phone line? I think it was about $20-25/month for the internet and about the same for the landline.  You could possibly get the landline cheaper if you don't have caller ID, voicemail, etc.   At that time, I did not have cable though.

  • I wish AT&T Uverse was available here.

When we were Indiana - they were AWESOME. But no, Comcraptic is here. UGH.

We have DirecTV coming out here to see if they can position a dish late this month. We shall see. We're paying around $200 for HD, phone, internet and then some sports channels, HBO & Showtime. I'm canceling the HBO & Showtime in May though. It's just too much!

  • Comcast.  They were actually a breath of fresh air after dealing with Direct TV...they are the devil.  Comcast may be a little bit more price wise, but I'll take their customer service any day over Direct TV's idiocy.

  • We also have comcast.  We have basic cable and internet and pay $40 or $50 a month.  It was actually cheaper to bundle with basic cable than to get internet by itself.

  • We use Charter, we pay a crazy low amount as DH works for them. We like the service, but I also would never have the option of going to dish because of DH>

  • We have comcast for our tv and internet.

I think our bill is about $150 a month. The internet is great. It's really fast on our laptop (our desktop is getting old so it's not so great on there).

We have the basic cable package with the DVR. We have an additional internet router (not sure if that's normal) for the high speed internet.

ETA: We also have no other options around us.

ps-Congratulations on buying your house!! Do you have pics to share?

  • We use Qwest.  It is about $35 a month for internet.  This includes the modem rental fee.  We were going to buy a modem, but if you rent one and it ever has a problem they replace it for free.  Due to bad storms etc. we have gone through three or four modems so it makes more sense to rent for us.

  • Comcast.  When we moved here four years ago, we first tried Dish, and they installed a dish on the roof (an independent installer, not an in-house one) without bothering to tell us that there was no way we'd ever get HD signals due to a tree in our yard.  When a second, in-house installer came, he told us the truth and we switched to cable.  When I called to cancel (we were within the 30 days), the phone person actually told me to CUT DOWN THE TREE.  A 100-year old elm tree, and the idiot tried to tell me I was locked into the contract and that I should just cut down the tree.

The tree has since been cut by the city due to dutch elm disease, and I STILL refuse to go with Dish.

We used to have internet through Qwest but switched after our 2-year contract was up.  Comcast is much faster than DSL, even at the economy speeds.

  • We use charter for internet and I think we pay around $35/month for just internet.

We don't have tv/satellite/cable.  We just use netflix.

We did used to have DirecTv and I was pretty happy with them.  I used to call to complain about my bill every few months and they would frequently give me discounts/lower it.  At one point I was paying $29/month for the $60/month package.  After all of those discounts expired though they refused to discount me again and that's when we got rid of em.

  • We have Directv for cable/HD. We have had it for almost 4 years now and haven't had any complaints. I would say it goes out on average 2x a summer (maybe less) in a really bad thunderstorm, otherwise it's very reliable.

For internet we have Qwest DSL. It's cheap, and we don't use the internet for much other then browsing and occasional music downloads, so it works just fine. I notice it being slightly slower then at work, but for ho wlittle I use it, it doesn't matter to me.

Another thing, we were able to bundle our Directv, Qwest, and Verizon bills. I have no idea how, but H called one day about why our internet rate had gone up slightly and the woman told him we could bundle.

    This.

  • We have DirecTV. We've had it for about 1.5 years (since moving to our house) and we've never had it go out during a storm.

We had Comcast at our last home (a condo where we couldn't have DirecTV). Comparing what we paid for Comcast, and what we pay now for DirecTV, we're now paying less for more channels. Comcast was expensive, even though we bundled with internet!

We have internet through Frontier. No complaints, our connection is really fast and it's cheaper than the cable option in our area, which is Charter.

Weird.  We used to have Comcast and they were the devil, switched to Direct and love them!  Never had a problem with the CS, but Comcast was always flaking out on us.  We pay about $90/month for cable and internet.

  • We have comcast and I'm fairly certain we're the only people on the planet who have never had a problem with them. Ever. Anytime we've had a question about something it's been resolved immediately.

That's really similar to what happened to us with Direct TV.  We live in an apartment, and they put the dish on our balcony (the only place they're allowed to go), in January.  Trees bloom come spring and service goes out.  They came out and told me the quality of service was unacceptable for their standards so I could get out of my contract no questions asked.  I got out, and they charged me the $427 cancellation fee!  Then when I called, some foreign guy repeatedly stated "mam, there is nothing I can do" over and over and over.  Finally I hung up and got someone who agreed to the refund (which would take 6-8 weeks).  8 weeks later, no refund.  I called everyday for 2 weeks straight, and kept email documentation of them telling me "yes, we owe you this refund"...and it was finally returned at about 11 weeks, just when I was going to dispute the charge on my card.
