WDYT about this?

I totally agree with the author of the article, and I think this whole sexualization of young girls has gotten out of hand and disgusting!  When does a 8 year old need to feel sexy?  Perhaps it's the mother's that are having difficulty with aging and their own sexual being that is the problem, and projecting it on to the young daughters.

Re: WDYT about this?

  • I could not agree more.  Not only was dressing sexy not as prevalent when I was a kid, but I was a huge tomboy, so I cannot relate to it AT ALL.  When I student-taught 8th grade (in 2004), girls were wearing knee-high black stiletto boots and mini skirts.  When I was in 8th grade, I'm pretty sure my wardrobe consisted of jeans and t-shirts.
  • This is why I'm glad I have boys :)

I couldn't agree more with the author.  I'm shocked when I see some of the clothes available to girls.  Even when girls are babies.  Why do babies need bikinis?  Parents just don't know how to say "no" anymore.

  • My friends and I wore t-shirts over our bathing suits until we were 16. LOL It is a very different world now. I know people probably said similar things when we were young so I try to keep things in perspective but I have been pretty shocked by family and friends decisions of what they let their daughters wear. It's like parents have forgotten they are the parents and can say no in a lot of cases.

I agree with the writer for the most part.

You don't think I looked cute in my string bikini circa 1975? lol

I also agree with the article. The whole push-up top bothers me. Girls have enough pressure and self-esteem issues growing up. Let's tell them they need to have big boobs before they develop them so when they don't get them, they can have even bigger self-esteem issues.

I agree with that partially, but the only way it's going to get worse from here is if people start walking around nekkid.  Hopefully I'm not eating my words in 10 years.

My sister has a strong hold over my nieces (15 & 13) thank goodness or I'd freak.

I'm also glad I have a boy, but I'm nervous as to what he'll be looking at when he gets older.  Eeek.

I somewhat agree. I was a really late bloomer and was teased relentlessly by boys and girls when I was in middle school. I would have LOVED a push up bathing suit/bra during that time, so that I at least looked like I had something under my shirt! I am always self-conscience now because of the teasing.

However, I do think that a pushup anything for a 7 year old is ridiculous. I am comfortable with the 'new' age that A&F came out with (12). Twelve is about the age that girls start developing, correct?

I seriously hated going to school when I didn't have ta-ta's.

Exactly...I understand when you're at that age of developing. It's the fact that they aren't even close to that age of developing boobs that I have issue with.

I'm sorry you had to deal with that, Katie.
