Booster Seat Discussion

How do you feel about the new guidelines regarding booster seats for kids aged 10-14 & under 4'9"?

Will you make your kids use a booster seat or do you think its a little overboard?

Re: Booster Seat Discussion

  • whaa..? I hadn't heard of this. So we're supposed to make teenagers sit in booster seats?

Age 14 - buckle in to your kiddie seat sweetie.

Age 15 - ok, time to grow up and learn to drive.

  • I would, yep. It'll keep them safer in a crash, so yeah. I wouldn't bring one with me at all times like a baby's car seat, but for every day driving in my own car, I'd make my kid use it.

  • I definitely will do the rear facing until they say (weight limit I think?) and then use a booster seat until they need it. I'm all about safety! They will also not be sitting in the front seat until they're 4' 9"

Yes Cause seriously? I didn't surpass 4'9" until 8th or 9th grade. According to this, my neighbor who is a grown mother of two still needs a booster seat cause she's 4'9 on a good day.

    I'd have to guess I was around 10 when I hit 4'9", I was completely done growing in at 13 / 7th grade (I remember b/c of playing volleyball) and I am 5' 6"ish.

I hope my kids are as tall as JJ and me for their sake. I will be that mom that makes them abide by laws/guidelines in the car!

  • My kids are going to hate me because I will totally be the mom to make them follow all these guidelines. Definitely the no front seat until 4'9" and rear facing until the weight limit.

  • Hi...Crappy soon to be mom alert here. When I hear booster think, I think of something you get for your kid to sit on at a restaurant. I have no idea what a booster seat is when it comes to cars....

  • After 12, height is irrelevant because your bone structure is more solid. So it's until 4'9" or 12 years old, whichever comes first. I honestly don't see how someone would NOT do this for their kid going forward. You'd make them wear a seatbelt, right? Why not make it so it actually works?

I do, however, get how much it will suck for the mom of a 4'6" 10 year old right now. lol.

  • I will absolutely do whatever it takes to keep my child safe in the car.  She's still rear facing and will be until she reaches the weight limit for the carseat, which is 40 pounds.

  • As a short/small person who has experienced getting in an accident and getting hurt because of your stature, I will TOTALLY follow these rules. I also saw the horrible laws in Italy, and how often kids were hurt and killed because of it. The statistics for injuries to kids from misuse of carseats is super high to begin with, so any encouragement to protect them is a good thing IMO.

As it is, DH doesn't want to wait until 2 to turn Jonathan's seat to forward-facing because he's tall and his feet already touch the seat and cause his legs to bend. But when you talk about the potential for injury, I'm just not willing to compromise. I was in a wreck 9 years ago that I still have issues from, and I don't want kids to have to deal with that.

We're actually shopping for a booster seat for Jeffery because he's quickly outgrowing his baby seat, and at 42 pounds, he needs something else. But I like the fact that FL has stringent carseat laws. I wish more states did.

  • I will follow these guidelines. Seriously, I would never forgive myself if we were in an accident and he was hurt because I failed to put him a car seat/booster. When I get out of the pediatricians, I will link some eye opening videos.

Totally agree with this.  I think the new "rule" is that kids should be rear facing until age 2 or 35 lbs.  Someone correct me if I am wrong on this.

FL law is one year (I'm sure there is also a weight limit, but I don't know it). New "guidelines" are until 2 years because of developing neck muscles.

  • I will absolutely follow it - whatever I can do to keep my kid safe.  I'm thinking we may not have an issue with an older kid though, since B is still off the charts for height and weight and hit the rear-facing limit for his seat at like 18 months.  He's a monster :)

    This made me lol.

I guess I'd do whatever to make my kid safer, but daaaaamn that sucks for little 14yo Suzy Shortstack.  I wonder if there's a way to make a teenage booster seat cool.  Puff paint?

  • Here, here, and here are a few videos about rear facing.
