Rottweilers?

Anyone have experience with rotties? I have an appointment to see one on Friday, but am a bit apprehensive because of some things I've read.  Any information is appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: Rottweilers?

  • They can be great, sweet, lovable dogs with proper training and socialization when they are young.  I would be hesitant to get an adult one without knowing a lot of details about its background.  Proper training for a Rotti requires a lot more than just "sit" and "stay".  You have to be really confident and vigilant in establishing yourself as the alpha, because they are powerful dogs and can be aggressive if they feel it is their role to protect their family.  Be really honest with yourself about your ability to handle a dog like that before getting one.

  • And I say all that as someone who is too much of a softie to ever be willing to undertake that kind of challenge.

  • We love Rotties :-) We have had 2. They do need to be socialized and exercised a lot. They need training and strict parents. They in general are very protective of their family. Many people were scared of our dog just because of what he looked like. They are stubborn but so loving and smooshy. Ours always thought they were lap dogs. nothing like a 120 lbs jumping in your lap every time you sit down. one of the down sides is because they are a large bread dog they do not live a really long time. 8-10 years is the typical life time. This is our hesitation with getting another. It was very hard on our son to lose our dog. Our last dog did have back problems that showed up later in his life. However no one could have seen it earlier then it was caught. Good Luck.

  • i had two growing up. my female was much smarter and protective then the male. i would get another one in heart beat. but check your home owners insurance because sometimes they wont cover you, we have state farm insurance and they have a one bite rule, which means you can have one of the high risk dogs on a list they have and they bite someone once you have to have the dog either removed from the property or put down. and i would defiantly only get a puppy of this breed.

  • My dog growing up was part Rottie.  Such a sweetheart and we got him at 6 months old.  They require a ton of training but they are big mooshes.  I would sooner get a Rottie or Doberman than a Pittbull.

  • I had a Rottie mix for a while.  She was the biggest love bug.  I agree with what everyone has posted here, with the right training and socialization, they are great dogs.

Same with pitbulls. Get them when they're pups and they can be the SWEETEST dogs.

  • Ive never owned one but been in contact with a few and all were adorable sweet mushes. Everyone is right that they need proper training and a strong owner to stick with it since they are a powerful dog.

My brother has an American Bull Dog, and its the same type of thing, a strong breed but when trained properly makes an amazing dog! He is a 120lb lap dog!

  • thanks for all the feedback ladies, we took the plunge and got a rottie mix.

His mom was so tiny, like 50 lbs, so hopefully he stays close to that size...but he's got such big feet! LOL

  • They are great dogs but do need socialization with other people/dogs  They also need training and someone with experience owning a dog.  Definately not the breed for a newbie in the dog world.

If you need an obedience trainer doggie clubhouse is great.  There are some pictures of Freya and I, we had a great time in their agility program.    http://www.acadogtraining.com/photos_agility.html

    congrats on your new addition
