Basil looking whimpy

I bought the plants and they already had maybe 15 leaves on them each. I've had them out in pots for 3 days and they're already looking wilty. Do I need to pick the leaves already? Maybe over watering? I water them each day because the tops are bone dry by the time I get home. The tag said full sun and they get about 8-9 hours a day. It's only gotten up to maybe 80 since I planted them.

You need to determine if you are watering correctly.

When the TOP of the soil looks dry, try to deterine if the bottom is also dry. You can usually tilt the pot and slide the plant out to check this. If the bottom of the pot is dry, then it is a fast drainer and you need to water it very thoroughly, until water flows from the bottom of the pot. If the bottom is soggy, the plant is getting too much water and the roots may be rotting. I'd repot in a larger pot with fresh potting mix if that were the case.

  • If you have your herbs planted in containers you might try moving them around so they have less sun.
  • Hey I'm in Louisville too, the tornado/storm winds knocked all my herb pots over!  But definitely don't water them every day, I'd even take them out of their pots, dirt and all, and throw some small rocks in the bottom to help it drain.  Basil likes heat and "being ignored" is how my mom always said it.  Not as hardy as mint, but close to it.  Do you grow mint for juleps?
  • I luckily brought everything in (the tomato plant was a pain!) for the storm. Do I still need the rocks even though the pot has a hole in it? I mean the pots are tiny, so I'm not even sure what kind I'd get. The guy at the garden center said the pots were a perfect size.

How often should I pick the basil?

No, I'm not growing mint this year. We're in an apartment, so I'm only growing things I use really often at this point.

  • Basil is really sturdy as long as it doesn't get spots (I don't know if this is a blight or bugs, but once ours just got black spots and shriveled...) Pick it as much or as little as you want, just the #1 thing about basil is to pinch off the white column shaped flowers that it tries to grow at the top of its stalks.  When ours gets to be about 2 feet tall it tries to flower, and if you don't pinch these off, they signal the plant to stop growing, like if you stop picking your zinnias or pansies.
