Sunscreen for babes

I this isn't the greatest day to be thinking about this.

Last summer I read there is some concern/controversy about putting sunscreen on your kiddo. Maybe it was something about the Pabas? I can't remember. And I didn't read enough to make an informed decision.

What is the story? What are you thoughts?

I'm leaning towards using something (obviously) but I'm not sure what is safest.

Re: Sunscreen for babes

  • My Doctor advised me to use some, and I agree. The effects of the sun and skin cancer are known. The effects of sunscreen aren't. At this point in life, lets battle the known. I'll definitely cover Caroline up with a hat that has a wide brim, and for the most part want to keep a cover up on her and use one of the swimsuits that has the sleeves, like rash guards. She's going to need something else, even when we aren't at the beach/lake etc. As my doctor said, hopefully, this generation will treat sunscreen as the normal thing to do and not an optional thing to do. Maybe we'll see lots of beautiful ivory skinned teenaged girls down the road :)
  • We use it too here, it's just too hard to keep Felix out of the sun. We use CA Baby sunscreen -- it's chemical free. I use it for myself also, it seems to be the only thing that really works well for me.

  • So what was the cause for concern?
  • I believe you aren't supposed to use it on babies under 6 months old, but really you shouldn't be exposing newborns to that much sun anyway.

  • There are questions about carcinogenic chemicals of course, but the thing I found most scary was the data on vitamin A.

I would never advocate NOT using sunscreen -- that's just ridiculous -- but choose wisely.  EWG's list is helpful.  We use CA Babies, too.

  • yeah, we have CA Babies for Caroline. I'm actually going to see if it works for me as well. I've been using prescription sunscreen b/c I have a reaction to so many things :(
  • This was a big topic last summer too.

I used this guide to help figure out which ones to buy.   I ended up getting Badger, California Baby, and one by Johnson & Johnson.  The one by J&J is way more cost effective than the other two and still rated pretty high.

Quick tips from the same site.
