ugh- bird nest tragedy

I am so upset right now-

A bird made her nest on our carport.  Once we discovered the nest (which is about 6 feet from our front door and the only non-sliding door our house) we did our best to steer clear and give mama bird her space- I would walk around and look at the entrance from about 4-5 feet away every day or so- just because I wanted to know when the eggs had hatched, etc. because we are having work done to our house and I was delaying it because of the nest.

Today I go out w/ the kids to run errands, put DS in the car, then take DD w/ me around to see if we can see the babies.  They were all on the floor of the carport.  Ugh- I was heartbroken.  I don't know who/why the nest was emptied.  I don't think DD saw them or realized what they were, but when I went back into the house to grab something, I saw one was still moving- so sad.

We left-  while out I googled to see if there was anything could be done & read that if any of the birds were alive to put them in a basket/faux nest & the parents might come back...  sadly it's too late for that now.

I am totally bummed out by this- sorry for the novel.

  • Aw that is really sad! I remember my mom trying to nurse a baby Robin back to health after it fell out of our tree at the old house (I was about 6). We tried feeding it through a syringe and everything. I think the poor thing died like a week after we found it. I remember my mom telling my brothers that the mommy bird couldnt take care of it so the aunt bird came and took it to her nest. (they were 4 and 18 mo)

  • That is so sad. Do you think someone did this or do you think the parents may have pushed them out. I have heard that sometimes they do that but all of them? So sad  :(

  • It could not have been a person- I would know if someone was on our carport as the dogs would go nuts.  I think if it was a squirrel the birds would have been eaten or more visibly injured.  It could have been another bird or I guess the mom.  I am wondering if maybe one of the baby birds died in the nest and she emptied the whole nest as a result.

DH just got home and I am making him move them.

ETA- OK, they are all still alive- per the various birding info I read online we put them in a faux nest close to where the original one was... I hope that the momma comes back and takes care of them.  I don't think they have much left in them and I worry they can't chirp loud enough.

  • Crap, I wish I had seen this earlier. There is someone in Arnold who used to take in birds lke this.

Call a wildlife rehabilitator.  They can tell you what to do.

  • Growing up we took several unfortunate victims of our cats to both of these places:

  • I hope they make it.

The previous owners told us that birds like to make a nest under our awning.  So far, we haven't seen any birds try.

  • They didn't make it.  I don't think that the mom ever came back.

We hosted playgroup today and my friend who grew up on a farm checked on them for me and then buried them in the woods (just under leaves basically) for me.  I couldn't handle looking.

  • I googled- and it said I should basically re-create the nest and put it close to the nest so hopefully the mother returns- which is what we did.

Based on the appearance of the birds they can not be more than 3 days old (they haven't opened their eyes.)
