Re: Local News News
Hmmm... I would love to know the back story of this.
Thanks for posting.
WOOD just issued the press release about an hour ago, so it would have been after their show ended.
When Craig James retired a few years ago, the station made a huge deal about it since he had been there for so long...showed clips of his old shows, shared stories, etc. Geha's been there just as long, if not longer - so for this to be so abrupt is incredibly suspicious.
She made a statement on her FB Page:
"With much regret, I confirm I no longer work for WOOD-TV-8. This is a very sad day for me. West Michigan is a great place to broadcast news. I want my colleagues to know what a privilege it is working with you. I want my viewers to know what an honor it is bringing you the stories that affect your lives and your communities. Thank you for your loyal support through the years."
Wow. You could read a lot into some of those words and phrases. Thanks for sharing!
For real!! I'm really curious what happened. I mean, Suzanne Geha is WoodTV news to me.
Wow! Even though I couldn't stand her, I still feel bad for her. I can't imagine what a shock that must have been to be let go so suddenly and how crappy feeling it must be. There was a news station in Flint that let go of their two long term anchors/weather people last week. Everybody was up in arms. I wonder if they are sister stations and management is doing a major shakeup at their stations.
Whenever I hear of people getting let go, I get flashbacks to when TH was let go of his job and how screwed we felt.
Oh, I'm sure that is it. They made some major cuts about 2 years ago. My friend's husband and worked their 30+ years - it was his one and only professional job and they let him go. They also got rid of Larry N. at the same time.
My friend's sister works for another station and news stations are hurting. They cut back on photogs, so now reporters are often taping the stories themselves. I'm sure they are paying the young reporters crap.
With the internet taking over, local tv news is becoming less important (I guess in my opinion), so even though it sucks for the field, it makes sense. I honestly don't remember the last time I sat down and watched a local news broadcast. If I want to know about a current event, I hop in the internet and catch it there on my time. I don't have to wait until 5:00 pm or 10:00 pm to find out. Being a tv news reporter/anchor isn't what is used to be.
This article is a nice tribute of sorts.

I don't love her or hate her, and I don't really quite understand why she's so polarizing. She's got her own style, but all newscasters do.
My first introduction to her was when I was at GVSU and I saw her interview her aunt, Helen Thomas. I thought she seemed really personable.
To add a different perspective, XN and I have a season pass set to record the 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. local news broadcasts, plus the 6:30 p.m. national news - so if we're not around or aren't able to watch at that time, we can still watch it when/if we get a chance. Getting the local news from a variety of sources and mediums is important to us.
