Anne Arundel County Schools
Hi,
My DH and I are potentially planning to move down to Annapolis so we can both work and continue to pay down our student loans. I realize this is a Baltimore board but hopefully you can help me out and answer a few basic questions.
1) What do you know about the Annapolis area? good or bad places to live in the area?
2) What do you know about the schools? I'm a middle school teacher and will be trying to get a job in Anne Arundel.
3) What other nice beachy/shore towns would you recommend? Why?
Thanks! I appreciate all your help- we're going to explore in the next few weeks but I of course value the opinion of locals!

Re: Anne Arundel County Schools
Hi! AA Co schools are generally pretty good. Some better than others of course. Broadneck and Severna Park districts generally the ones that get recognized as the best. Several people here live in and around Annapolis. I lived there for six years and loved it. You have to be careful though because there is a tendency to go from really nice neighborhood to a hearing gunshots neighborhood in about two seconds.
Have you guys looked at the eastern shore (Kent Island) at all? Also my friend lives in Chesapeake Beach and really likes it there.
1) What do you know about the Annapolis area? good or bad places to live in the area? Like MrsRemy said you really have to be careful about what area you pick. Some of the areas (esp. closer to downtown) will have gorgeous expensive houses right next to high crime areas. If I were you, I would rent an apartment or townhouse first to see what areas you like. Do you have a budget for rent/home prices you're looking at? Annapolis home prices, even in this market, tend to be high and if you live in the actual City the taxes are quite high.
2) What do you know about the schools? I'm a middle school teacher and will be trying to get a job in Anne Arundel. I went to Davidsonville Elementary, Central Middle School and South River High and back then (I graduated in 1997) they were all good schools. From what I've heard Broadneck and Severna Park schools are excellent. I don't have kids though so I'm not up on all of that.
3) What other nice beachy/shore towns would you recommend? Why? It really depends what you like and where you will be working. Annapolis and Bay Bridge traffic can really suck so I would keep that in mind depending on where you think you'll work. Edgewater, Crownsville, Davidsonville and Riva are all nice areas.
ditto Gracie's recc to rent for a year or so if possible.
We moved to Annapolis about 4 years ago and we rented for a year in Eastport which is a section of Annapolis that is walking distance to downtown. We rented a 2.5 bedroom (third bedroom was railroad style, so you had to walk through it to get to another bedroom) 1.5 bath house w/ a decent yard/deck for $1400 a month when we first moved here before buying our home. We still live in Annapolis, but are not w/i the city limits. There are plenty of neighborhoods in Annapolis, Arnold, Severna Park, etc. w/ water access- some neighborhoods have their own beaches, docks, etc. I don't know how water-oriented you want to be in terms of where you live- in terms of beachy/shore towns.
AACo schools vary. I don't know much about middle schools- I know those are tough years though so it's hard to judge.
