Repost: What is your shoe policy at your place?

Today's "My Married Life" blog is about how some people have "shoes off" policies at their houses. I was wondering what you guys do.

I grew up in a "use your judgment" kind of situation. If your shoes are muddy, or wet, then you take them off at the door. If it's dry out and you only walked on the ground from the car to the house, then ya know, keep em on. My dad wears shoes inside, but I'm a barefoot-unless-I-must-wear-shoes kind of person.

DH's dad is kinda crazy anal-retentive about his house. The walls are white, the carpet is mildly off-white and neither are to be blemished. You aren't allowed to leave the garage to enter the house if you have shoes on.

So DH and I have kind a hybrid situation. He and I take our shoes off at the door, but if anyone comes over then the "use your judgment" applies.  When we finally get into our house (hopefully in the next month and a half) we're probably going to the shoes off policy. Just because the whole house has hardwood floors and those stain and get scratched easily.

  • Shoes off at our place. With three pets, I vacuum enough as it is without adding shoe debris to the mix. Darren and I both grew up in no-shoes households so it wasn't a big deal to make that rule.

  • We've adopted the shoes off rule in our house as well. Neither of us grew up that way...but DH is VERY OCD about cleaning...so in order to maintain that we kick our shoes off when we come in. There are times that we keep them on...i.e. if our hands are full or we're just running in/out quickly.

When guests come over, for the most part they take their shoes off as well b/c they see ours by the door. However, if we have a lot of people over the rule goes out the window. :-)

  • We don't have to a strict shoe rule at our house but I prefer to have my shoes off unless I'm going some where. So I usually kick them off at the door. DH pretty much does the same thing. Our house is all hardwood floors so messes are easy to clean up, if so one does track some dirt in. Neither DH or I are too OCD about messes. We have two very fluffy pets so we already spend a great deal of time sweeping.

As for guest they can do what ever makes them most comfortable.

  • We have shoe baskets near the front and back door, so generally take them off and put them in there.

DH generally walks around the house in socks or bare feet and I walk around in slippers or bare feet, but it's just a comfort thing really.  We only have carpet in the bedrooms.

DH leaves his work boots outside because they are all covered in coal.

  • We are generally shoes off.  Except in summer.  I wear my flip flops around the house.  Guests usually keep their shoes on.

  • No shoes in our house either, pretty much no exceptions.  We both grew up in no shoe houses (maybe an Asian thing?) and I'm thankful we agree on this one.  My friends all know and we ask any new guests to please remove their shoes.  I kind of feel bad sometimes that people hate it and just don't say anything, but I don't think it is that unusual and that is just how we feel about our home.

     This... almost exactly.

  • We all definitely had this same discussion a few months ago.  I think I was the only one that thought it was pretty dang rude to demand guests to take off their shoes when they enter your home.  I still feel that way.  Oh biitchy me.

I grew up loving to be barefoot and my mother walked around in slippers, but my father came from a family where you always had shoes on, from the time you dress in the morning to when you change into pajamas at night.  My parents have an impeccably clean house even with pets and wearing shoes inside.

DH and I sometimes have shoes on and we sometimes don't.  But I would never dream of asking anyone to take their shoes off in my home.  I don't know how they feel about it, and to not care is completely insensitive.  I feel that way because I had a dear friend in school who had terrible foot odor, even through creams/powders/medication, and would never take her shoes off.  She was so embarrassed by her situation.  I'd rather my guests do what is comfortable to them than be uncomfortable.  That's what a hostess is supposed to do anyway, dirt be damned.

Everyone has different opinions obviously.  I've taken my shoes off at other people's houses when I visit one-on-one, but I rarely take shoes off when I go to an actual party.

    Do the creep.
  • We're a shoes off house.  I grew up that way, DH did not, but he didn't like having a messy floor in his parents' house all of the time.  So we made that decision mutually right away when we bought the house.
