So, I just got one of those scam letters...

Today in the mail, I got a letter from some "South African Lawyer" saying that they need my help because someone with my last name was in trouble blah blah blah and if I helped them get the 88.8 million dollars, I can keep 40% of it.

seriously? people really get these letters? it creeped me out so much, and I knew something was up when I saw the south african stamp on it before i opened it. my mother told me to put it in a ziploc bag incase there are some chemicals on it.

What would you do with this? i feel like I need to call the police or something.

The really sad thing is that someone out there is falling for this.

Re: So, I just got one of those scam letters...

  • I would do nothing about it, except toss it in the garbage.

The police can't really do anything with a piece of junk mail until a person that has been scammed comes to them.

And I'm just not paranoid enough to even think about chemicals being on it.

  • Wow, that's actually pretty scary. Honestly, though, I would think you'd have to be pretty stupid to fall for something like that. But, I guess it does happen. It's insane how people get your address. If I got something like that I would probably just toss it immediately and not even open it.

I don't really think about chemicals in the mail, but yeah, I suppose it can happen. After I open/touch any mail my instinct is to wash my hands immediately. I just think of how many germs are on it and how many people have touched it. Especially an envelope where someone else, a stranger, has licked it closed, gross!!!!!!! This makes me think I'm turning into a full out germophobe.

  • yeahhh...now that I'll think about it, I'll just throw it away.

soo creepy though...you see it on tv and whatnot, and you never think they'll try to scam you. I think the creepiest part is that they're all the way in south africa and picked me somehow.

  • I would have been both creeped out and annoyed. I also would have just thrown it away.

Now I'm wondering how many scam letters actually do have chemicals on them.

  • I knew they were sending e-mails, they've been doing that for years, but I had no idea they were sending actual letters through the mail!  That's crazy, I feel like it's a waste of postage on their part.

You could call the cops if you want, but they won't do anything about it, so I'd just throw it out.  I doubt there are chemicals on it.  If they wanted you to send them your name/money, they wouldn't want to kill you with chemicals before you could do that.
