My husband and I just bought a new construction home last May. After a failed attempt at growing grass in the "soil" we have on our property, we have looked into some landscaping options. We also recently had our land surveyed and found out we have an additional 15ft in the back of our yard that we were unaware of. Good news? Sure, but it just so happens that area is completely disheveled and needs LOTS of fill and leveling off. We have .28 acres and were quoted $5,500 to bring in fill to level off our land and make for proper drainage of rain/snow, 3 inches of loam, and hydroseeding. My husband and I are young and don't have much experience with homeownership, does this seem reasonable?
Thanks in advance for all your help!:)

Re: How much is too much?
I think it may be correct, depending on your area and the job itself. I think the best thing you can do is contact several local companies and get quotes to compare.
ETA: Make sure you check the company out with the BBB and possibly the local Chamber of Commerce (though they are not always neutral). Get a contract for the work, and I wouldn't pay in full until the job is done.

This is not one quote, but they've all been teetering around this number. We've only had one person come out, but others have given us rough phone estimates ranging from 5-6k.
For any project, get three to five quotes.
For each quote, get references and check the BBB.
Consider paying for Angies' List, a fee for service website that rates contractors.
This lesson was hard earned.
I got very badly worked over by a rogue painter who usurped a legitimate business took my deposit and disappeared. The local police were no help in any recovery. I could not afford to hire a second company. While painting the outside of the house myself with family, I fell off a ladder, fractured a vertebrae and was laid up for six months and in PT for another 6 mos.
