Any good Negotiators?

H and I are going to begin car shopping this weekend..... YAY! But it is becaus ym car has decided it wants to crap out on us and we would rather not throw more money into esp with a baby on the way.

I know right now it is still a buyers market, but I feel like a bum haggling with dealers.

I have found an SUV (2009 Honda Piolot EX with 30K miles)online I like they are asking almost $26K right now. I want to offer $22 and then throw in that we will be putting X amount down on it so that we only have to finance X amount including their dealer fees.

Is lowering the price by $4K too much, I am willing to go up to 23.5 and then put money down but I just feel like I should be taking advantage of the buyers market.

What are your thoughts and suggestions? Do I begin even lower?

Re: Any good Negotiators?

  • I don't know what a reasonable price is for that particular car, but my biggest advice is to not let them talk to you in terms of payments.  That's a classic car salesman strategy.  Oh, I think we can work it out to $350/month for you...and crap like that.  Keep the conversation focused on the bottom line.  And don't be afraid to walk away.
  • If thats truly what you want to pay, have them "work out the numbers". They will probably come back and say that they can't do it. If they can't.... stand  your ground and walk away. Tell them to give you a call when they can. Make sure to shop around at several dealers... the end of the month is always a good time to shop, so you have that on your side :)

  • You can always make it sound like you aren't entirely sure this is the car you want and that you are open to other makes and models at other dealerships. Just tell them If they will give you the price you want then they have a sale. If not, then, eh, oh well! They will take some off the bottom line and then try to say something like, this is SUCH a popular car I can't give you that price. Don't believe them! Be ok with walking away from the dealership. In fact, EXPECT to leave the dealership without a car. Also, be careful if you are planning to do a trade in, because that is where you can REALLY get screwed! !
  • When I just bought my new car, we walked in saying we were already pre-approved through our bank, but wouldn't tell them for how much.  We asked for the bottom line right away.  The salesmen didn't like that, but it cut down on the haggling.

Also, go on KBB & find out what your trade in & the Pilot is worth.

I definitely don't think lowering their price by 4K is too much.

The car we bought was a 2010 with 80 miles on it.  We bought it for 5K less than their advertised price.
