dh and i want to start buying some clothes for the baby... i wasnt sure if i should focus on getting newborn size or buy a range of clothes for the first year. what did everyone else do?

Hello. I've waited here for you. Everlong<3<br>
Re: buying baby clothes
Don't buy anything until after your shower, then you can figure out what you will still need, if anything. You will get a TON of clothes.
With that said, I know it's almost impossible to not buy a few things after finding out the gender, so stick with size 0-3 months. Don't bother with Newborn sizes. The 0-3 will fit almost right away no matter how big or small he is. If he's big, the newborn size may not fit him at all. Don't worry about onsies and crap...just buy a few cute, irresistable outfits!

If you gotta buy something buy big. 6+ because everyone buys little.
We had 2 boxes filled of stuff my mom bought and what I bought, I returned a few things but everything else we kept and some he never wore. I only bought 6-12 months on sale, I had rules for buying.
I still would hold out. My SIL went NUTS with a clothesline present from my niece. I have tons of clothing in 6-9 months. He is set for the fall! You also never know how fast your child will grow.
Unless you see something special that you'd really like to buy, like others suggested, I would wait until at least after your shower. I did not have to buy any clothes for D until he hit 6-9, 6-12.
As for sizing, D never wore newborn-ever! As a matter of fact, the day before my C-section, when I had my last u/s, his estimated size was so big, I had to run out and buy a new coming home outfit.
I would not even go too nuts buying bigger- you just never know how your baby is going to grow. D is really tall and was in 12 months at close to 8 months- I would never have anticipated that.
It is so fun to shop, but it made me sick to see all of the clothes that he did not even get a chance to wear.

I'd wait. I can probably count on one hand the times I've actually bought clothes for K, and she's got a closet full of cute stuff. We got sooo much as gifts, not so much from the shower, but as welcome baby gifts when she was born. Most of the stuff we got was NB and 0-3 months. She wasn't even that big but the NB was really too small, it only fit for the first few days.
Buying big is hard too, bc you don't know how fast or slow they will grown. For example, K was in 0-3 months for a long time (like until maybe 8-10 weeks old) but outgrew most of the 3-6 months stuff within few weeks because she had a major growth spurt at 3 months old. She's only on the bigger end of average percentile wise but she is wearing 6-9 months now.
It was completely the opposite for us! I got next to NOTHING for clothing at my baby shower. Everyone bought things off of the registry instead so, i was happy that I had bought a lot of clothing myself. G ended up in newborn clothing for almost 2 months (even though he was 7lb, 14 oz at birth) so, DH had to go out and buy a bunch of newborn outfits. You just never know.
A good tip though - if you like Carter's clothing (we love it) buy there and keep the reciepts/tags. Their return policies are phenomenal.

We've received so many clothes that I haven't had too buy much.
whatever you buy/receive just wash a couple things in Newborn size. 2 wks before Mj was born I was told an estimate of over 7lbs at that point. He was born 6.8 lbs and swam in newborn clothes. however I was born weighing almost 10lbs so newborns barely fit me.
When I go shopping now I buy things on clearance to use next year. Already I have a couple sweatsuits, jackets, christmas pj's etc..
Also I stocked up on a box of newborn diapers and then a number of size 1's.
