Nervous about Interview- Salary Questions

I haven't interviewed for a new job in almost 6 years. I was recommended for position I am in currently and had an "informal" interview, just as a formality.

I posted a while back about my division getting eliminated- and at the same time an opportunity came available with a relative's company. They haven't posted the job, and aren't interviewing other candidates. They just think I will be a good fit with the company and want to "show me around" the company today, and "talk numbers." (and they don't know my division might get eliminated- that is staying under my hat).

The hard part is that I'm really nervous about the $$$ part of the interview. Currently I work in a government position, and have full benefits. Family member's company doesn't offer sick leave or nearly as much vacation/holidays as I receive currently, or health/dental/vision like I get now (I can switch over to H's plan though- so that part is covered) but I think that the position will be a much better fit for me overall- and I will actually get to use my degree.

I'm not really sure how to negotiate salary based on the current benefits package I receive now- So I'm wondering if anybody has suggestions on how to "value" that part of my current package versus what they have available to offer me?

Re: Nervous about Interview- Salary Questions

  • In doing offers and compensation packages I've found that it doesn't matter what you make.  I know that sounds stupid but you have to figure out what the $$ is for the position/responsibilities.  salary.com usually overstates actual salaries so I'd look at other positions on monster or career builder and see what the going rate is for that position/industry/experience requirement, etc.

Most times vacation time is negotiable so keep that in mind.  What will be the increase in cost to move to your husbands benefits?  Make sure you figure in your salary, cost for his benefits, and figure out what is an acceptable amount of vacation time for you.

Then you can go into the meeting with knowledge of what is industry standard and what you need to make the change.  Knowing both of these you can then negotiate and find a number that works for both of you.

  • I also agree with PP.  If it's a change in rolls, the pay probably has nothing to do with what you're making now.

After THEY bring up the topic try to get them to be the first to spit out a number and start from there.  You don't want to say your number first becaues if it's way lower then they expected you left money on the table and if it's way more you might scare them off.

  • Thanks ladies!

I had my interview yesterday and it went for 3 hours, which included a tour of the manufacturing facility.

The VP wants to have a meeting with me and the owner and hash out the $ aspect- nothing $ related got brought up except he told me about all of the benefits they offer, and he also said they could offer me additional incentives that we would discuss at the next meeting. So next week I'll have a better idea- and now that I have a better idea of the different aspects of the position I feel much more comfortable with a number in my head that would compensate me for having my H use his benefits, as well as my retirement, etc...

Thanks for the advice about letting them offer first- I will definitely push for that- who knows, they could see my value as higher than I do *fingers crossed* and I'd hate to lowball myself without even knowing it- or scare them off unintentionally because I got greedy.

Thanks a lot for the advice, it has really helped me ease my mind about the situation.
