Interview: Would you abandon the traditional suit on this one?

I'm interviewing tomorrow with a luxury wine/spirits brand for an events position. Colleagues who know the business well have told me they are incredible focused on their image as luxury, beautiful, ahead of the curve, etc. Given that information, I'm thinking of abandoning the traditional black suit/light colored shell combo for the interview and going with something more modern. I'm thinking high heels, black dress (office appropriate length of course) and a modern black suit jacket, then adding a chunky necklace and bracelet.

Thoughts? Too far from traditional? I don't want to look "corporate dowdy" if what they're shooting for is luxurious fashion forward. But I also don't want to go too far trendy, as they're a very long-standing high end brand.

  • If they're very long standing, I'd go with the black suit but a colorful top and interesting jewelry

If it's a first round interview I would stay traditional.  Depending on how that went you can swing the dress if it's appropriate for a second round.

  • I agree with Dr. Loretta's suggestion, and if you're really concerned about it, just choose a jacket with a more modern cut. I don't think there's any reason why you can't look modern, trendy, and professional in a black suit.

I agree w/ all of this. a little trendy on 1 thing, but not too much.

I'm also not a fan of large/chunky/distracting jewelry during an interview.

I don't know where the black suit idea ever originated. If I owned one, I would never wear it for an interview (I would most likely only wear it to a funeral). The best suit color for business (according to research) is charcoal. However, I like your idea of making it edgier, especially the bold necklace. I'd still want to wear a dark grey suit, but I'd pair it with a red blouse and thenecklace and heels. I think it could work.
