When to switch from crib to bed?

I am sorry, I know this has been asked before, but I guess I wasn't paying much attention because we weren't at that stage yet.  What age did switch your LO to a big girl/boy bed?  We will have #2 when K is 21 months old, and trying to decide if we need to purchase another crib, or if he will be okay to switch to a bed.  I have read on line that kids are ready from about 18-36 months, and when they are starting to crawl out of the crib.  Doesn't help me pre-plan!  Haha.

Re: When to switch from crib to bed?

  • When DS was about 18 months old, we converted his crib into a toddler daybed.  Didn't cause any problems.  DH wanted to do that before he learned how to climb out.  Then when he was about 27 months old we switched him to his new "big boy" room, with a twin mattress on the floor.  We wanted to do it plenty early so he didn't feel like he was getting kicked out by the baby.  He loves it.  Took a week or so for him to calm down from the newness, and he likes to crawl out and get stuff into bed with him a bit more than before, but it's all harmless, and doesn't keep him from sleeping.

  • Brogan went to a twin bed at 18 months.  He decided he was ready on him own.  He was also able to climb out of the crib before then so we went with it :)

  • We switched Ava at 22 months because I was 6 months pregnant and because we bought a new house. We had to baby gate her door to keep her in her room but she did okay with moving at that age.. However, I wouldn't want to move your 1st right when the baby is born (I would do it at least 6 weeks in advance) so that would make him pretty young.. Will the baby be in a bassinet/ pack & play at all?

  • We moved Ella around 15 months and she did GREAT! Jovie, I plan to keep her in a crib until she is 10 :-P. She is trouble!
  • We switched C at 14 months and I think that was a little too early.  We went through a period where he kept getting out of bed instead of sleeping through the night like he had been in the crib.  It lasted for about 2 months.  I think anytime between 16-18 months he would have been ready.  I would say that 21 months would be plenty old to switch to a big boy bed! :-)

  • Reese is still in her crib and we don't plan on switching her any time soon.  She doesn't try to climb out, so I figure, if its not broke, why fix it?

We bought her furniture for her.  Her crib converts to a toddler bed and then a full sized bed.  We bought new furniture for Girer.  She also had a convertable.  Their dressers are adult-sized, so they will have this furniture until they leave the house!

eta:  Reese is 2 years old!

I am glad you mentioned the PNP- I totally forgot that we had that to use!!!  Thank you!!!  That may save us a little money by buying us time :)
