Local night away - where would you go?

So DH and I have our 5yr anniversary on Friday (happy anniversary to Sofya too!).  While we won;t get to go out this weekend (going to my sister's for Easter) or even probably the next weekend (going to my dad's).  Sometime in May we would like to do a night out and stay in a hotel while the kids stay with SIL (lives with us).  Last year we did Bethesda and found an $89/night hotel that was nice and walked around, had drinks at a few places, did some shopping at a little toy store and Barnes and Noble (it's so relaxing going in there without the kids), dinner at Jaleo, cupcakes at Georgetown cupcake and then a night alone and sleeping in (til 10AM).  It was great and while I am not opposed to Bethesda again, where would you go in the area for a similar evening?

Re: Local night away - where would you go?

  • Have you been to Annapolis?  That's where I suggest for a fun night away.
  • DH and I did a night at National Harbor for my birthday.  There were a lot of restaurants and bars and the waterfront is pretty.  I didn't attempt to shop, so I don't know how the shops are.

We were able to find hotel deals by shopping around.

This was my suggestion too. Pre-baby DH and I did a Ghost Pub Tour and stumbled home to our hotel. It was a blast!!

  • If we were looking in Annapolis and Frederick - where would we want the hotel to be near in terms of walking distance to restaurants and just a nice walk etc.

For Annapolis, the Marriott is right down at the dock area. The Loews is further up West St but still walkable and is near some fun bars/restaurants.  I would recommend either those. There are also some B&Bs downtown that might be worth checking out.

We stayed at one of the Historic Inns of Annapolis. The price was reasonable and the location was awesome!

  • I would go to Alexandria and eat at Restaurant Eve and then get drinks at PX. Or I'd go to Annapolis and see a show at the Rams Head Tavern and get snockered on brewpub beer :-)

  • thank you, Tracy! Half a decade!

what about Harper's Ferry? Or when was the last time you played tourist in DC? you could stay in Georgetown, maybe Sequoia's will be open by then.

  • The Loew's on West Street in Annapolis is supposed to be really nice too. Depending on the weekend you pick- Annapolis may be a booked solid due to Naval Academy graduation week.

Personally, I would stay in downtown DC and play tourist!

  • Right now, two restaurants in Bmore have been on my mind: Woodberry Kitchen and Brewer's Art (I've been craving good beer). So, I'd probably do a weekend in Baltimore. Hit those two, plus the Walters and the quirky American Visionary Art Museum.

Have fun! Annapolis is a great idea, too. Now I want cream of crab soup.
