Reason #1,345 I miss AZ
No basements! Seriously, why did people in the Midwest decide it was the thing to do to build basements in areas that receive tons of rain? Who decided to continue with the trend and build them into every freaking house???
Sorry to just jump on here and start biitching (I figured you guys would understand and/ or ignore me) but I am so overwhelmed with our basement debacle. Our sump pump decide to stop kicking on sometime yesterday after we hit a record rain fall total of 1.88 inches! H came home to find 4 inches of water standing in our basement, a mattress and set of chairs ruined and a big ol mess that needed cleaned up at 11:30pm. After we got through all of that, the pump went out again last night and we woke up to another mess of water 
We are now looking at a $2500 price tag to get a new, amazing, never-fail pump installed. That was our budget for landscaping this spring. While we have the money, it still sucks to sink it somewhere that doesn't make a visual impact on anyone (if that makes sense).
Sorry this turned out to be so long. I'm just tired, cranky and hate spending money on parts and labor!

Oh no!
But try claiming this to your homeowner's insurance. When the water heater broke at our old apartment and destroyed a ton of our stuff a month before the wedding (thankfully, E saved my gown & shoes), we got all the money back from our renter's insurance.

And boo rain, I mean, seriously??
I'm late on this one, but that totally blows. We had a ton of water issues with our basement last year. Not 4 inches, but enough cracks in the foundation for water to seep in. DH had to spend a weekend chiseling out all the cracks and refilling them with concrete filler, then we painted Drylock around the whole dang basement. So I agree, basements suck!
Hopefully the new sump pump is like magic for you! And just make your DH get his hands dirty doing the landscaping so you guys can save some money there
