How much is too much?

My husband and I just bought a new construction home last May. After a failed attempt at growing grass in the "soil" we have on our property, we have looked into some landscaping options. We also recently had our land surveyed and found out we have an additional 15ft in the back of our yard that we were unaware of. Good news? Sure, but it just so happens that area is completely disheveled and needs LOTS of fill and leveling off. We have .28 acres and were quoted $5,500 to bring in fill to level off our land and make for proper drainage of rain/snow, 3 inches of loam, and hydroseeding. My husband and I are young and don't have much experience with homeownership, does this seem reasonable? Thanks in advance for all your help!:) [Poll]

  • You're missing the option "I'm not young, but I'm totally clueless!"  I have not a clue if that's a lot or not, but I can sympathize over the joys of homeownership!  Nothing is ever as easy as you expected in your mind!

  • I voted no - based on gut, and that that is about how much land we have (we might have a bit less) and I was thinking it would be around 5,000 to do what we wanted (similar to you). We are a few years away from getting to landscaping so I haven't investigated beyond getting a guy business card at the Home Show last weekend.

Try getting 2 more quotes to compare.

  • When H comes home I will ask. He was a landscaper.

I feel like that is a standard price though...

  • That sounds about right. My husband has been doing it all but the cost of loam is still pretty high. Then add labor and equipment(gas) and you've got yourself a high bill. We havent gotten a hydro seed qoute yet, so no help on that. We're having about 1.5 acres of our land hyrdoseeded and we're budgeting around $2000 for that alone at this point. If you have some you Luke and trust I'd go with them. If not, ey another qoute.
  • Thanks everyone for your help!  I was so bummed we missed the Home Show last weekend, but we headed to Augusta to meet up with friends instead.  We've had 3 other places give us rough estimates of 5-6k over the phone, but they are supposed to be coming to do site evaluations soon.  The cost seems high to us, considering there's so much we'd like to have done, but at the same time I think landscaping is essential.

  • I voted yes-- because many towns will let you have fill for free. You sign up with their Public Works department and they will bring you fill from their projects. You then pay someone to push it where you want it.

That would save quite a bit from that quote...
