best place for apartment searching?

My sister is interviewing for a job near Friendship heights, and if she gets it, will be looking to rent a one bedroom apartment starting mid May. It's been a while since I was in the apartment search mode in this area, so can anyone point me to where she can look? The catch for her is that it's a lower paid job, so she can only afford about $1000/month for rent. She also has multiple animals (small dog and cats) which significantly limits her choices, I know.

??Any good sites she can scout out, or anyone know of a possibility for her?

I'm also trying to warn her of the whole "cost of living" increase, since she'd be moving from the Detroit area. I don't think she realizes just how crazy it is out here... granted, I didn't grasp it either until I actually paid the bills :)

Re: best place for apartment searching?

  • With that budget, she'd probably do best if she looks for a room in a group house. There are usually some good ones right in Friendship Heights. I'd look on Craigslist.
  • Problem with group houses/roommates is the fact that she has multiple animals... as in FIVE cats AND a small dog (a pug). So really, I'm thinking her best bet is to find a basement apartment or condo or something where the landlord is tolerant of pets.

And yes, I've already given her the 3rd and 4th degree of having so. many. animals... but she's a vet tech, animals are her thing, and she takes very good care of all of them ;)

Maybe she can find a roommate who is also an animal lover?

  • I'd look on craigslist, but I think she's going to have a hard time finding a place that will let her have 5 cats and a dog! I'm an animal lover and even I would balk at that.
AlternaTickers - Cool, free Web tickers
  • She can look at apartmentshowcase.com

it has places in the area, but obviously the costs vary

also when I moved here I also looked at Apartments.com

Seriously. Most places that allow pets have a limit of one or two. I doubt any place run by a management company would allow it - she'll have to find a VERY animal friendly landlord. Good luck to her!

I know, she has the same problem in Michigan... and had luck with individuals who are renting out their own house/condo, who like animals, as opposed to a corporate apartment building. So I'm hoping she can luck out here as well.

We've had the "seriously, 5 cats is WAY too many" talk, but it is what it is, so I just accept it, and let her know that if she got 6, I'm going to have her evaluated for the risk of animal hoarding ;) I'm an animal lover too, with 2 cats and a dog, and I also couldn't imagine 5. But she loves them all, takes care of them all (working in a vet hospital has it's perks!), and her house isn't insanely dirty... so I really have no reason to complain other than I can't imagine having that many animals.

Thanks for the sites ladies, I'll forward them on to her!

  • Because I never clean out my bookmarks, I still have all the links we used when we were looking in DC (in addition to Craigslist). We ultimately found our place actually by talking to someone else in the building.

    Anyway, here they are:

http://www.johncformant.com/ (mostly Capitol Hill, IRC, lots of places were no pets)
