Central Maine Ladies - Roofers

We need a new roof on our house - complete tear off, as it already has 2 layers of shingles, new flashing, and soffit vents

I went to the Home Show in BGR last weekend and got some names/numbers, I also have clipped all the roofer ads out of the Rolling Thunder this week, and I have the card of the guy who did the neighbors' roof this past fall.

Who has had a roof put on? What do I need to know? Any good recs? Any horrors? Any comment on the names I have?

No one who's name I got is found anywhere on the internet, or if they are it is on a review site with 0 reviews. Also, the ads in the Rolling Thunder do not list the town.

Re: Central Maine Ladies - Roofers

  • We are getting a new roof in a month and are actually going through Lowes. For us, it was the comfort of knowing they probably aren't a business that could potential go under after the roof was on and then have issues with the roof and no one to turn to.(Not saying that it would happen either way, this was just one of the reasons) They also do background checks on all of their roofers(they contract it out) And we were able to negotiate the price. Also, we are saving an additional 10% by using our Lowes card(We have the money so we are just using the card then turning around and paying it off)

I know we had another estimate done from someone in the central Maine area that we had heard good things about, but I can't remember the name. I will ask DH tonight!

This probably didn't help at all, but thought I would let you know. :)

  • We had a half roof put on last year and will need to bite the bullet on the second half this or next year, depending on how the other half holds up.

We had to have our completely stripped and redone due to a terrible DIY project done by the former owners, making their craptastic work the second layer.  We also desperately needed the chimney repointed before it fell off the roof.

We ended up hiring Superior Roofing (we're in Portland and I don't know how far north they go) because my husband had seen their signs around and liked the looks of their work.  I think we paid $2200 total- $1400 for the roof and $800 for the chimney.

The process was we called them on a rainy morning when the roof first leaked into our bathroom and they came by to do an estimate.  The owner Ben climbed up on the roof to take a look and gave us a written estimate and a book of sample shingles.  He gave us his pitch about his crew, his products, and the time involved.  It all sounded good to us, so we signed up a month later when it rained hard enough for us to remember we really needed to do it.

The first guy came solo to do the chimney.  He was there ALL day- I mean to the extent that my DH set up a floodlight to light things up on the roof once the sun started to set.  That guy came by early the next day to finish and then the whole back of our house was covered in a giant tarp to protect the siding and windows.  They had like 6 guys going to town on it.  They took down the hideous antenna, which involved coming in to disconnect the wiring in the basement and in the attic.  (That was our only complaint- they didn't put the insulation back right so it got cold fast in James' room until DH went up to fix it.)  They had that thing stripped and repaired in fast day.  They cleaned up all the debris and gladly left the tarps that were ours (I forget why they needed ours- it was for something out of the ordinary) folded up neatly.

Like I said though, I don't know if they would come to you, but I'd certainly recommend them.  It's the worst finding a contractor like that- I hate just picking a name without a personal recommendation and just going looking in the BBB to ensure they aren't terrible!  Good luck!

  • I have both of these suggestions lined up to to quotes next week and plan on calling the one the neighbors used. We can't afford to pay what the neighbors paid though.

We are hoping that because our roof is smaller and much less complex than the neighbors that it will be more like double Erika's price and not the $9,000 the neighbors paid.
