lasagna with a side of ______ ?

I made lasagna last night for company tonight and I want to serve a side with it but I just don't know what.  I'm going to have salad but I don't want to have bread since pasta is already carb-loaded enough.  Any suggestions?

I probably don't need anything but I'm still looking for ideas of what to serve with pasta cause I always draw a blank!

  • Honestly I think lasagna with a good salad is just perfect! I always feel like I should serve something else with pasta too, but when I do it just becomes too much, KWIM?

  • I think a nice salad is fine.  I do like bread with things like lasagna to help sop up some of the extra sauce etc., but I'm a carb addict.

I agree completely, this is how we usually do lasagna as well.

Ditto salad and bread. Adding bread is carb-heavy, but what goes better with Italian food than garlic bread?! Smile

  • To me lasagna and garlic bread go hand in hand.  For some reason I really like broccoli with lasagna too.

  • I was also going to say bread of some sort...I LOVE italian bread with it or nice warm breadsticks.  But a salad should be plenty :)

    This.

My MIL insists on having a veggie with every meal.  I feel like lasagana is one of those where it just doesn't work.  A salad is fine.

  • Spinach... since I like it IN the lasagna, so I think it would go great as a veggie on the side.

I normally do salad and garlic bread.

  • What about a caprese salad? Big chunks of tomato or grape tomatoes with mozzarella, basil and balsamic? I love adding that to a meal since it's not too heavy but it's a significant enough side dish.

But like other people said, you can't beat garlic bread with lasagna!

  • Ditto to a salad and garlic bread. To me, lasagna's already sort of its own mush of goodness - adding a cooked vegetable next to it on the plate just seems weird.  ETA: Though if you really wanted a separate veggie I'd suggest something like asparagus that has a little crunch to it.

This sounds yummy!!  I vote for this - not too heavy.

  • I agree that lasagne w/ salad and bread is plenty, but waht about sauteed spinach too?  I always love that.

  • You could always go with broccoli, my old standby Stick out tongue. However, I think having a salad is fine. I also agree that garlic bread is a good addition.

  • If you want something a bit different for a salad I would recommend a roasted veggie salad.

The other day I served roasted Brussels sprouts, asparagus and broccoli with some good shaved Parmesan, some fresh basil leaves, a drizzle of truffle oil and some fleur de sel. It was a really yummy side dish for the Bolognese I had made.

I agree with pp about also have some bread. People don't have to take it if they don't want to, but I can't imagine having lasagna with out some sort of good bread.

  • Thanks ladies.  I just ran up to the market during lunch and picked up some Italian bread so I'll voila it in to garlic and parm bites.  If it was just DH and I for dinner tonight, I would feel like I needed a "complete" meal...but since it's not, I feel the need to offer more.  I like the idea of broccoli or spinich though...I'll keep that in mind in the future on pasta night!
