Rock N Voll

We are going to be in Boston for Memorial Day weekend. We'll be in town to run the Run to Remember on Sunday and I'm having a birthday BBQ for T on Saturday at our friend's in Salem, NH. I'm not sure what your plans are that weekend but I'd love to get together if you're around!

ETA: I've seen you around the Travel board and had restaurant questions for you about Chicago. We booked The Girl and the Goat and are debating about L2O. Have you eaten there?

Re: Rock N Voll

  • Hmm, Memorial Day weekend might be tricky as that's our anniversary weekend (holy crap, six years flies by fast!).  But I want to meet you, darn it!  I guess it'll have to be another time :(

I'm jealous about Girl and the Goat.  I've been to Alinea but not L20.  You'll have to tell me how it is.  I was a little disappointed with Alinea, as you might have seen from my posts on the Travel board.

What else are you doing in Chicago?  I've fallen in love with the city in the past year or two as I've found myself there pretty frequently for work and fun and have discovered how cool a city it is.

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • The only definite plans are the Architecture Boat Tour and the Museum of Science and Industry. We love to wander through neighborhoods and eat so we'll do a lot of that I'm sure. :) We're not 100% sure about L2O because of the $$, but it's our anniversary so we may splurge. T has been poring through the guidebook and I'm not sure what else he has written down. Any suggestions?
  • I definitely have some suggestions!

The new glass platforms at Sears (Willis) Tower are very cool.

Definitely hit Millennium Park.  The Bean is awesome, the water park area is fun, the amphitheater is cool, and it's just a neat area to walk around in general.

Second City is a legendary improv theater group. Try to catch a show.

There are a couple of other big museums in the city and people seem to recommend all of them: The Art Institute, The Field Museum, The Shedd Aquarium.  A little ways into the 'burbs you can go on a Frank Lloyd Wright tour, too.

You probably already saw me recommend Xoco for breakfast (and Rick Bayless's other restaurants, Topolobampo and Frontera Grill, which are all attached to each other) and Art of Pizza for deep dish.  There's another breakfast place that DH remembered from years ago that I really enjoyed, but the name escapes me now.  I'll have to look it up at home.  I really haven't even scratched the surface of Chicago's restaurant scene though--it's pretty extensive and awesome.

Alinea is the priciest meal we've ever had, but overpriced meals are our specialty :)  We're pretty frugal overall but spend freely when it comes to food.  So my vote, of course, is to splurge away at L20 and enjoy!

  • We also are really frugal unless it comes to vacations so I'm leaning towards booking L2O. I'll let you know how it is!

I flipped through T's notes last night and he's got us going to Millenium Park and Grant Park and hopefully we'll catch a free concert there. We did the Second City when we were there 10 years(!) ago but it looks like their schedule isn't up yet or there's nothing going on that weekend.

He wants to spend some time wandering in Wicker Park too. We're a good cross between fancy restaurants and Diners, Drive In's, and Dives, so we like to check out the local stuff. Instead of bar crawls, we do food crawls. I'll definitely check into Rick Bayless's restaurants.

    Thanks for the tips!

You guys sound just like us; we really must meet!

Skip Chinatown in Chicago if you have any thought of going there.  So not worth it.

If you want to go to any of RB's places, try to book reservations well in advance.  At one point Topolo didn't take reservations, but I think that might have changed.  Xoco you'll just have to get to relatively early since it's more of a breakfast place and I don't think they do reservations.

  • Did I see on the Travel board that you guys ate at Momofuko in NYC? What did you think? What are your must eat places when you're here? I want to know what I'm missing out on!

Haha, isn't it funny how you sometimes miss the attractions in your own back yard?

We went to Morimoto and it was awesome.  We had the omakase and loved it.  The only (admittedly big) negative was that in the surf & turf course the "wagyu" beef was completely bland.  That was a big disappointment but the lobster accompaniment was good as were the other four courses.  Dessert was absolutely to die for!  Some moussey concoction made from tofu with a berry sauce that was just sweet enough and a tangy apricot sorbet for contrast.  Soooo good!

We've been to NYC twice now in under a year and I really want to try to get down there more often for quick weekend trips.  DH has never been to the Statue of Liberty and I just want to eat my way through the city.  Plus, I want to see if I can hit that sample sale again Wink

Oh that would be great!  We were in and out sort of quick for a wedding this last time around, and I thought you lived sort of far from the city?  I don't really know NY at all though. I just spent years commuting between the airport and conference rooms Stick out tongue

We're about an hour and a half north of the city and we try and get down there as much as we can. We are two city people living in the country!

I will definitely let you know if we get down there again and have some time.  It'd be totally fun to have a great meal together!
