Anyone in Corrections around?

My BF is trying to become a correctional officer. His whole family is in corrections, so along the process his family has been telling him about it. He went in for his exam the other day and passed the reading comprehension but not the math. They said that he has to call to make another appointment for another math exam and it will be after May 1st but he has not been disqualified based on scoring below requirements in the math exam this time.

From my understanding, he has gone through their educational/experience check and passed, which is why he was able to take the written exam. A few days ago, his father dropped the bomb that he doesn't think BF isn't qualified enough to become a correctional officer and that he should enroll in ITT Tech's correctional officer program if he wants to get the job. Now BF feels under qualified and that if he doesn't drop everything and go enroll, he will go through the entire process, including the background check, the physical and psychological exam, but he won't get the job.

Is his father correct?

Re: Anyone in Corrections around?

  • I'm not in corrections but in LE. Where did he take the exam? Is it through the academy or through the agency itself?

I'm not sure where you are located but you can go onto the South Bay Regional Training Consortium website and they have practice tests on there. I don't remember there being a specific math test and because I didn't go to the corrections academy it might be different than the regular academy so I'm really not sure.

Anyhow, I would tell him to keep his head up. Most people fail out of the process because of the background. In the current economy though, it is easier to get hired if the schooling has already been completed. Right now it's an agency's market. Cops are getting laid off just about everywhere, so the departments can be very picky.

  • I would tell him to keep applying. It doesn't make sense that he would go through all of the application steps if his scores weren't good enough. His dad isn't the hiring officer right?

I agree that some agencies whether it's city or county are going for experienced candidates that have graduated from the academies over a new recruit because they have the schooling already and experience in the field but I would still apply.
