Gaithersberg/Germantown?

Hi ladies,

My brother may accept a job in Potomac.  We are not familiar with the area. What areas are a reasonable commute? Any sketchy parts to steer clear?

Thank you for your help!

Re: Gaithersberg/Germantown?

  • I'm sure some of the other ladies can provide more specific info but here's my two cents.

    1. Between Potomac and Gaithersburg/Germantown there are very few sketchy areas. There are a few in Rockville (and possibly some 'eh' neighborhoods in Gburg/Gtown) but for the most part it's a fairly nice part of the DC area.

    2. Commute coming down 270 to to Pot. could be ugly depending on the time of day. The actual drive isn't many miles but it could take a very long time depending on which exits he would be getting on/off at.

  • Is there any reason he wants to live in those two cities?  If he can afford it Bethesda would be a much better commute.

  • Thanks for the help.

No reason, just looking at options right now and those were the two cites that came to mind.

  • I think the commute down 270 would be a bear.  You could add Chevy Chase, Kensington, Bethesda, parts of Rockville. You really just need to look at the neighborhood to decide if it's what you want Rockville is pretty big.  I like some areas better than others.

  • Depending on what part of Gburg he moved to, he wouldn't necessarily need to ride 270. North Potomac is affordable, closer to Gburg prices, and also close to Potomac/wouldn't necessarily require 270.  If you did Montgomery Village, the East Village section is nice, I'd steer clear of the rest.  The Kentlands, Rockville Town Center & the Rio are fun areas where you can walk to shopping, restaurants, movies, etc., but of course that makes them a bit pricier.  If neither of you are very familiar with the area, honestly I'd recommend getting a real estate agent- I know Long & Foster has ones that specialize in rentals.  Even if you wind up doing a private rental off Craigslist, the real estate agent should be able to give you a guided tour around the neighborhoods.  GL! :-)
