Heirloom Tomato Question

Hey everyone:

I started some heirloom tomatoes from seed several weeks and they started off fine.  Since then, I've put them outside gradually to harden them off, but it seems like they've quit growing (or are just growing extremely slowly!).  Is this normal?  I'm thinking that since they're not hybrid, they just naturally grow slower?  I'm planning to put them in those upside down hanging baskets when they get bigger, but it seems to be taking forever.

If it helps, I'm in zone 8, I water them every other day and they are planted in fertilized soil.  The plants look good, no browning, wilting, etc.

Thanks!

Re: Heirloom Tomato Question

  • What's the temperature been?  Tomatoes don't really get going until it gets and stays around 80.

  • It's been in the upper 70's and low 80's the last few weeks, but it does get cooler at night and the days haven't really evened out yet.  Maybe that's the reason, I didn't even think of that.  Thanks!
